Why is my ipad pro freezing?

Ever since I got my ipad pro 9.7 inch, I've been experiencing some scroll freezes, in safari and many other apps, as well as swiping freezes. Though the freezing will only occur for like 2 seconds, but it actually freezes and and continues normally in these 2 sec, like gets interrupted in this duration. I've tried to restore my ipad, and also restart it but all in vain.

iPad Pro 9.7, version 10.2.1 , 128 GB Wifi Model.

iPad Pro, iOS 10.2.1

Try holding down the Sleep/Wake and Home buttons at the same time for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears and then allow the device to reboot.

If a forced restart does not help try a System Restore. First backup your device using iTunes. Also import your photos to your computer and copy all important data. Try restoring as New first and testing it. If it works then try restoring the backup and test it again. The backup could be corrupted. Here are the steps for a Restore:

FWIW, my understanding is that if Background App Refresh is turned OFF apps in App Switcher will not refresh so you can have as many as you wish there with no effect. Even with it on the iPad should work properly. Mine does.

You have tried a lot of things already but at this point this is what I would do.

I would make a backup to iTunes. Then do a Restore as New, not from the backup, and test your iPad at that point. The Restore as New installs a fresh copy of the iOS so you can eliminate any system or app corruption.

If after a restore as new it is still acting up it is likely hardware. If it quits acting up restore the backup. If the issue then returns the backup is corrupted and unfortunately you would have to reconfigure all from scratch and redownload all your apps, a royal pain, I know.

How many apps running in the iOS App Switcher?

Something is causing these issues.

If you have dozens and dozens of apps running in the iOS App Switcher all refreshing in the background, this could be a source of all of your iPad issues.

You can't have scads of app running in the App Switcher, especially any apps that constantly go out to the Internet to get updated data.

I was trying to spare the OP from having to do a complete erase and setup as new as I suspected that there maybe some corrupted apps or data.

Hence I was going to advise that the OP quit all background running apps, first, to see if this clears up the issue.

Then have the OP turn off Background App Refresh in the Settings app.

Really trying to avoid a complete erase and restore as new scenario.

I believe I have exactly the same problem as Kq2001. My iPad Pro 9.7 (purchased Dec 2016) freezes frequently in the same way, in various different apps but most severely in games. It even happens in core Apple apps such as Maps.

I have tried an erase and restore, but from a backup and not as a new iPad (I cannot tolerate losing all of my app data).

One other observation, I sometimes see small black squares flash on the screen...can be just a few or can be dozens. This happens just for a fraction of a second. This makes me wonder if I have a hardware issue with the graphics processor.

In any case, VERY frustrating for someone who has used iPads since the first launch and now upgraded to the premium model.

I have an iPad pro also with the same problems. I reset to factory settings. It did not help It's still havI got freezing problems, which seems to be getting harder and harder to use. I also have a 128 GB and it's a 12.9 inch. Typing is hard, keyboard freezes. It seems my problem started little by little In the past few weeks, after I updated the iOS 10.3.2.

I have exactly the same issue. iPAD Pro 12.9, iOS 10.3.2. Core apps such as Settings freeze. Task switcher is unable to close it. Restoring to factory default doesn't help. I only run 1 game and never run more than 1 app. I always close app before running Settings. Storage used 15.35 GB. Storage space available 108.82 GB. Background app refresh is disabled.

This is short of saying iPAD Pro died with Steve Jobs.

I have reset home/sleep button many times. It helps for a short time then my problem persists. Even a complete factory reset help to no avail. The most frustrating thing is while I type on the key pad. I can type very fast then in an instant I'm typing in slow motion or at a complete stop. When I reset home/sleep it alieves the problem for the short time. My iPad will be 2 years come November. A plus is I can pair it with my Mac in times of emergency! Any thoughts? thinking back, this problem was starting before I updated iOS 10.3.2. I noticed freezing screen while using apps like Pinterest. Thanks Teresa

Do you have scads and scads of apps running in the background in the iOS App Switcher?

Having a large quantity of apps running in the background can eat up both RAM and CPU proceszes.

It's better NOT leaving a ton of apps in the App Switcher.

Also, have you tried turning off Background App Refresh in the Settings App?

Doing this keeps apps that rely on an Internet connection from constantly updating and refreshing in the background when not in use.

Ok, it's been a few hours since I had turned off all of Background app refresh. This has greatly improved typying on the keyboard Speed. Feeling much better about my problem. I still get a short screen freeze once in awhile while moving about on an app, but this has improved too with your suggestion. Thank you MichelPM for your help.

Another thing you can adjust is if you are getting email automatically or not.

You can set the iOS Mail to fetch email manually each time you launch the iOS Mail app instead of automatically, OR increase the interval time that the Mail app fetches email.

This is found in the Settings app under Mail, Contacts, Reminders settings panel.

I have my Mail App/s set to fetch manually only when I launch my Mail app.

Keeps the iPad from always reaching out to a mail server all day long,

BTW,

You're welcome!
