DirecTV Now on Apple TV--no local channels

I just purchased a couple of Apple TV (4th Gen) to replace my 3rd Gen devices, specifically because I am cutting the cable in favor of DirecTV Now (streaming service which is available only on 4th Gen). I had checked, before ordering DirecTV Now, to be sure that local channels were supported in my area (they all are except CBS, which requires a separate CBS All-Access subscription). So I get home, and oddly, there are no local channels.

After contacting DirecTV, they informed me that local channels (NBC, ABC, and Fox) are available ONLY on Amazon Fire TV devices, NOT Apple TV. I picked up a Fire TV Stick, and confirmed that the local channels are, indeed, available there.

I realize the misleading information is DirecTV's responsibility, not Apple's, but it's pretty annoying. I'll keep the Apple TVs, because they provide other functionality that I like, but it's annoying that I also have to have a Fire device to get the local channels.

Just passing along the info for anyone else who needs to know this, and also to express hope that Apple is working with DirecTV to get those channels included in future updates.

Don't worry, I did. I told the guy on the phone and also sent a feedback form.

I mainly just wanted to give folks a heads-up in case someone else was hoping to get local channels. The apps for the Fire device and the Apple TV are VERY different, I noticed. For the most part I think the content (other than local channels) is the same, but navigation is quite different. I'm still getting the hang of it, so hard to judge yet.

I have access to local channels on my Apple TV, but not on my Amazon Fire TV Stick, nor on my Macintosh computer. They don't show up in the guide.

Here's DirecTV Now's explanation:

The billing address on the account does match your location so you would be getting the locals on the Apple TV since the Apple TV uses built in location services to verify locations. The Firestick and Mac would use the location based off the IP address from your internet.

I told him that our ISP is the phone company and it appears that their servers are near a different city—or even a different state. Often a Web page will assume I'm near Dallas, which I'm not.

DirecTV Now:

The IP address that I am reading through our chat system from your chat window is also showing Florida. Which could be impacting the local channel availability for your computer and Fire stick. What I would recommend doing would be to contact your Internet Service Provider to see if they would be able to change your IP to a location closer to your home address, or if a Static IP address would be possible.

Question solved!

I think I'll just get another Apple TV.
