Yesterday imessage on my iphone was showing the contact name when someone texted me. Now it is showing only the phone number. I have not knowingly changed any settings. What do I need to do to change it back to showing the names?

Thanks for your help. I followed your directions and 3 of my messages have names with them but most don't. I just had my son test text me and his message shows up as a number instead of his name. Scrolling through my messages I have one from yesterday that showed the name yesterday and today it shows a number.
If i could I’d give you the biggest high5... just spent 4 hours, 4 reps, and 3 disconnects, 2 supervisors with Apple chat to get no where! 3 minutes online and come across your post and Tadaa!!!!
My messages are only showing numbers & not my contacts mames
This worked for me. Edited one contact. Restarted phone. Now shows names in messages vs numbers.
Stanners technique worked perfectly. The only thing I added to it was to turn off the nicknames. So one or the other fixed the problem instantly. No need to restart or hard restart.
I had to turn off short name completely. My phone is glitching like this at least every day. Very frustrating.
I had the same problem. Someone texted me then names disappeared. I signed out of ICloud and made sure to toggle save contacts, and then resigned back in. Fixed it.
I tried a hard reset and turning off iMessage with no luck. Then did a backup of my contacts into Verizon‘s cloud and that fixed my problem 👍
I deleted the contact from device and reinstalled on device and then the message showed again with name and not number next to it
I’ve tried that. It keeps doing it plus it changes their numbers to +91

Double check that your Contacts are selected (turned on) within iCloud.
System Preferences->iCloud-> make sure the checkmark is in place for Contacts
I just turned the phone off and back on and everything came back. Contacts were back to normal.
