Yesterday imessage on my iphone was showing the contact name when someone texted me. Now it is showing only the phone number. I have not knowingly changed any settings. What do I need to do to change it back to showing the names?

None of the above worked but I just got it fixed. (The numbers instead of names happened to me because I signed out and into icloud trying to fix something)
So I went to Settings > Contacts > Short Name and then turned the Short Name in this menu off, and looked at my messages and it was fixed, and then turned short name on again. (I also first played about with orders for the Sort Order and Display Order in Contacts before going to short name, not sure if this had an influence)

Try this next. Go to Settings>Messages>MMS Messaging. Turn it off and then turn it on again.
Do all your devices have the current software. My iPhone is my main device and keep it backed up and my iPod and iPad update to the same info on iphone. The iCloud shows info from phone. It is good to keep icloud backed up
incase you need to do a sudden reset of phone and lose all your information. Have you tried deleting contact and reinputting contact then backing up. Is your information correct in imessage settings. In settings; your name; iCloud
now has a message button; have you turned it green? That was added in last update and not everyone knows it is there. Have you updated your devices to the current iOS version.

Go to Settings > Contacts > Short Name and deselect "Prefer Nicknames." For some reason, the phone number seems to default as the Nickname for downloaded or imported contacts.
Stanners technique worked perfectly. The only thing I added to it was to turn off the nicknames. So one or the other fixed the problem instantly. No need to restart or hard restart.
I tried all of these and nothing worked. Although I did notice that when I change the numbers in my contacts, it no longer auto formats the number to separate the area code.
