Trying to import .mp4 video files

I have started using iDVD again after some time. I need to import videos. But I now get this error message: unsupported file type: unknown format. What can be wrong now?

iMac (21.5-inch, Late 2012), macOS Sierra (10.12.3), null

This is what I did:

I have five .mp4 files that are 540 and 720p, at 10 seconds each. They imported perfectly fine in iDVD.

But a longer .mp4 file (1hr 47min), which includes audio and editing, will not import into iDVD. This video is 1280 x 720.

I found this other posting but I like to confirm the process:

iDVD does not recognise mp4 file

The poster wrote: "...the route I now need to take to get my home videos on disc are to transfer the movies from my source to the Mac, adjust them iMovie, export them from iMovie using 'Share', Load them in Quicktime then export them again. Then Load them in iDVD and burn."

I will try it now and see if it works. Is there another process that is easier?

It didn't work completely.

This is what I did:

I opened my .mp4 file (1280 x 720, 1hr 47min) and it showed in the QuickTime Player. Then in QuickTime I went to "File", "Export", then selected 720. I then exported it to the location to save it. After it exported into a second file, I then dragged to the iDVD project.

Is there a way someone found to make chapters for scene selections?

Thank you~

So when I imported the QuickTime version of the file, it only created one link in iDVD to play the movie entirely.

And, as mentioned previously, I was able to import some short .mp4 files as they were without having to go through Quicktime. Does anyone know if there is a maximum length that will work without having to use the QuickTime player export method?

I AM FRUSTRATED WITH APPLE BECAUSE THEY PUT IDVD IN MANY CUSTOMER'S HANDS TO BEGIN WITH AND PEOPLE STILL WANT TO USE IT BUT THERE ARE CONTINUOUS ISSUES.

1) Tried using iMovie v9 but it has been discovered now that it doesn't import movies with the right colors to begin with because I have OS Sierra. So, I can't even use iMv9 to use with iDVD for chapter markers because the colors are all faded.

2) However, when importing directly to iDVD, the movie colors are fine. But, as you know, no manual chapter markers. (There is only an option to add time interval chapter markers in iDVD. That is S*CKS.)

3) Not all .mp4 movies import in iDVD also. It appears it has something to do with the length. As I said, it wouldn't import 1hr 51m. But it did import 1hr 5m directly to iDVD without having to do any QuickTime "save as". And I am still trying to figure out what the max amount to iDVD. I really thought it just had to be under 2 hrs.

4) So now, "thanks to Apple", the only way to add a movie with specific scene selections is to 1)import the one main movie file separately, and 2) have separate smaller section movie files to import separately into a manual tab on the iDVD menu page for scene selection.

THANKS, APPLE!

AND WHY DO YOU SELL SUPERDRIVES STILL WHICH THEY HAVE THE CAPABILITY TO BURN ALSO???
