Itunes remote app not working fully

I've been using itunes on a PC and the Remote app on my iphone for a couple years. It's been working great, but a week or two ago a strange problem appeared. I can see my itunes library on my iphone and ipad, and can navigate, skip to next track, go back, etc., but I can no longer click on a song and have it start playing. I now have to click it, say "play next", then click the fast-forward button to get it to play. Once the track is finished, itunes goes back to the next song in the original order, prior to me adding the new track, rather than continuing to the track after the one I added.

What's going on? I see there was an update a week or two ago; did something change? The update notes don't mention anything like what I'm experiencing. I've done a reboot of all devices, but it's still happening.

This is getting frustrating. My music server is nowhere near where I listen to music, and I find myself needing to go to the PC to do what I used to be able to do from the phone.

Help!

iPhone 6s, iOS 10.2.1, itunes is on my PC.

Hopefully this will help at least some people with this problem!

I managed to get Remote to connect...

-So start by leaving iTunes open on PC

-Restart Bonjour Service and Apple Mobile Device Service (CTRL+SHIFT+Esc, go to 'Services' tab and then right-click and restart on both)

-Delete and re-download the app on iPhone

-Open app, disable and re-enable Home Sharing

-Select 'Add an iTunes Library'

-Go to iTunes on PC and try to reconnect app

-Enter only 4-digit code and DON'T PRESS ANYTHING ELSE (i.e. 4 keystrokes, no more)

-There is the temptation to hit return/enter or click on 'Done'. Don't! Took me about 45 seconds for me but it failed.

-Then re-enter the 4-digit code (without leaving the screen on your iPhone)

-Wait... and connected!

That's what worked for me. There are almost definitely some steps above that aren't required for this to work but that's what I did and I'm not sure which steps you can safely omit.

I really hope this helps at least one person connect! 🙂

I also have this issue with several devices. I have used IPhone 6+, IPhone4S, 2 IPad2, Mac Mini and Macbook. Regardless of what device or computer I use the remote app does not perform properly.

I contacted Apple support, case # 100290677068. They had me troubleshoot thing sthat I had already tried. Then they had me factory default my phone, download the remote app, connect it to my ITunes library and try again. The app operation still did not work properly.

All devices are using the most up to date OS or IOS that they can. If this is an issue of the remote app not being compatible with older versions then that is a problem that Apple need to address. This was a good and reliable app until now.

Have had same problem for around a year now - really annoying. I use iTunes with 5 airport expresses but after years of using AirTunes this problem is making me seriously consider Sonos. Unbelievable that Apple is ignoring this issue.

Interestingly it is not a happening at my weekend house where I have older OS and iTunes, but use same app on my phone. So clearly it’s one of those two upgrades, not the app.

Thanks for that, but while it may solve connection issues, it doesn't solve the underlying issue of the app's lost functionality.

I can connect just fine; the app just doesn't work the way it used to prior to an update almost a year ago, after which tapping a song to play it stopped working. We now have to take all these extra steps to clear the playlist, fast-forward the current song, then select what we want to hear. I used to just click the title, and it played.

Very annoying.

Just tried it mine after coming across this thread, hadn't used the remote app for a while so who know when this bug cam along. When I tap a song in a playlist it won't play it, can skip tracks back and forth when playing from the home screen. Same behaviour on iPhone SE and iPad Air 2 controlling my Mac Mini's iTunes Library. Download the app again like other in this thread but no luck.

Despite the fact that things used to be more stable and less feature bloated in the past, I solved this pairing issue by being in the same Wifi network with both devices. Often, the Mac was in the 5Ghz network while the phone was still in the 2.4Ghz Wifi. Between both networks, not all broadcasts or/and UDP packets seem to traverse (although same router). I did not want to Wireshark it in detail. Anyway, without having analyzed the root cause, I helped myself with both troubled devices being in the same network. Maybe this helps or is a hint for you. Thanks OJ, but that doesn't help in my case. My phone is connecting via WIFI to my Apple Airport Extreme, which is on one port of my modem; the PC with iTunes on it is on another modem port. So, the iTunes PC isn't on WIFI at all. The Airport and the PC are on the same home network, with full share rights. The fact that I have partial functionality seems to indicate that my connection is fine, it's the app that is broken.

The frustrating thing is that when I called Apple Support, the tech said I was the first person to report this. Five minutes on Google and I can tell that's a lie.

Get it together, Apple!
