Latency Garageband 10.1.6

Hello,

Just purchased an Akai MPKmini to work with GarageBand on my MacBook Pro Retina 13", early 2015 running macOS Sierra 10.12.3. Processor is 2.7 GHz Intel Core i5 with 8GB RAM. I'm experiencing latency in GarageBand with just one instrument loaded. There's really nothing in settings to address this. Do I really need to buy an audio interface just to run Garageband?
