File size issue. The same photo that I view in Photos might be 10mg in size. When I attempt to send or view in finder it can be 10x that size - perhaps 120-140mg. Any idea what's going on?

I am seeing a huge file size variance on photo files in Photos vs the same photo in Finder. When I try to send or share I cannot as many of the photos are reading in excess of 100mb - and it appears its sending from Finder. in Photos the information shows in the area of 10mb. Makes no sense to me. Both are JPEG files I believe. I sure its something simple but........ Thanks for any suggestions.

If you export the unmodified original you will have exactly the same file and file size - if you export the current edited photos then the file size is determined by you and the export settings you choose - it can be smaller or larger than the original based on your personal choices

For example these personal settings will give you a very small file - other settings will give you larger or much larger files

Clearly you do not understand in spite of saying you do

The settings in the image I posted will produce a very small exported file - other settings will produce larger files up to very a very large file depending on your personal settings - you are in total control of the size of the exported photo

Changing the Photo Kind (the green arrow) will affect the file size and if you export a JPEG (the most common) changing the two fields marked by the red arrows will change the resulting file size - an you are in total control by the settings you choose

Ok. So I use a program called Watermark to put a signature on my digital photos. When I try to import a photo into the program, some go in fine while others get into the large file mode. There is a 100mb limit. Same thing with trying to import photos into Messenger, Facebook etc.

To get to that particular screen: I can access that window if, when I’m in a program like Messenger or Watermark etc and try to import a photo into the program. I get the following process.

From Facebook opening Messenger and trying to import a photo.

From Messenger: User uploaded file

I get directed to Finder:

User uploaded file

When I open Photos I get the option to view as a list or icon and can select the fields (i.e. size etc).

User uploaded file

So having said all that you can see that I'm dealing with huge photo files when accessing the same photo this way vs opening the file directly in Photos.

Hope this helps - took me a bit to figure out how I got to this screen as well again. I get the same sequence when I try to import into basically any other program like Watermark, Facebook etc.. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you for the followup.

I understand but below you can see the screen shots of the same photo, The first accessed via Finder shows the photo size at 94mb, the second straight from the Photos app, size 14 mb. What am I missing? What changes between the two. When I try to export the program often uses the 94mb file, obviously being rejected. The work around is to always share/export directly from the Photos app but I just curious why the difference.

Look LarryHN. I do completely understand the window in your post. It appears you don’t understand mine. Exported directly from Photos you get that window. But the same file viewed from Finder is 10X the size. I am simply asking why. Did you even look at the screen shots - if not look at the **** screen shots. Your initial comment is insulting for someone on a help line.

Thanks for the Photos and Safari screenshots.

I tried to duplicate or contradict your findings, but I can't figure out how to get the Open dialog in Safari into the state shown in your second screen shot. No matter which view is chosen beforehand, switching to Favorites (or any album in Photos under Media) drops me into icon mode.

When I view a Photos picture in Finder, I get comparable results with Photos Info (e.g., both 2.8MB), but I may not be viewing it the same way you are. Could you post some text and a screenshot showing how you were viewing pictures inside Photos using the Finder and seeing different sizes?

OK, I see. What you refer to as "Finder" is what I call a "file open dialog"; "Finder" is a different program with a similar function. Also, I was missing that you were using the context menu to switch views.

When I view-as-list in a file open dialog, I get a three-column view (thumbnail, date, size) where you are seeing only two.

What level system are you running on your Mac? Your signature says "iOS 10.2.1", but that's an iPhone/iPad system version and not a Mac system version. For example, I'm running macOS Sierra version 10.12.3 (16D32) as shown in "About This Mac" under the Apple menu.

I also do not see the size discrepancy you are seeing. The only huge items I see in my list are my longer video files.

I wonder if your library might need repairing.

Are you using external editor extensions with Photos?

I can reproduce the increased file size you are seeing in the Media Browser, when I am using the External Editors extension to call editors, that write the files back with layers as a TIFF or PSD file - for example Photo Shop CS6 and when the external editors extension is passing the JPEGs to the editor as TIFFs.

What happens, after using an External Editor Extension is, that the editor is saving a temporary file with graphics layers. This file has roughly a size of ten times of the original JPEG.

When I am now trying to mail the photo or access it from Safari in the Media Browser, Photos is still showing the small size of the original in Photos, but the Media Browser is showing the Hugh size of the temporary PSD file or TIFF with graphic layers. Usually the size will be back to normal after the first sync with iCloud. By that time the intermediate file with layers will have been flattened to a JPEG of the original size.

Sort of - What comes back out of the Cloud is very reasonably sized. I’ve selected to keep originals on my hard drive for future use. Some apps don’t allow importing directly from the cloud so I have created a separate file to transfer into before exporting. A bit of an extra step but it works for now and doesn’t consume much space. Hope this helps. Always open to suggestions. Thanks.
