How to know for sure if someone's read reciepts are off?

I have been texting someone through iMessage and they have had their read reciepts on for a long time and all of a sudden they all say delivered even after that person texts me back. Is that a for sure way to know that they have turned their read receipts off? Any possible reason that would happen otherwise? Can it be proven?

Sorry, not sure what you are asking? If the person has Read Receipts turned on on their Messages app, then you will receive a notification (courtesy of them) that the message has been read. If they turn it off, then you won't receive a notification indicating that the message has been read.

Since this is a completely voluntary setting that the user can turn on as a courtesy, not sure what your question regarding proof as to whether it is off or on is? Can you clarify what the issue may be?

Yes I know how they work. However this person tells me that they are still on and it has been a days worth of constant messaging and all the messages I send only say delivered. And I can still scroll back and see the last read message about 40 messages ago (assuming this is when they turned them off ) I just want to verify that there is no way that could be happening because of a technical problem and that they simply turned them off and didn't notify me.
