Actually an easier way to silence start up chimes is to not turn computer off. Mine stays on 24/7. Either put it to sleep or put display to sleep. Put to sleep is accomplished from the Apple menu.

To put display to sleep Open Desktop and Screensaver system prefs and go to Screensavers and in bottom right corner is set hot corners. Choose a corner and use the drop down menu for that corner to set Put Display to sleep.

OK great, it worked. i had to quit them from the dock and do it all over again, now it doesn't pop up. thanks people for the help. now if i could get that annoying sound to stop. haven't had any success with that one yet. wifey is getting very angry as I often sneak out of bed and start up computer in the wee hours and it wakes her. yikes!
