Memory issue

I've noticed my late 2012 iMac has been very slow recently. Whenever I open a software, there is always spinning ball. And even quitting the softwares takes some time. There is lag in scrolling. Opening folder takes too much time. Basically... computer has become unusable!

So when I looked at Activity Monitor, I noticed my iMac was low on memory. So I booted into Safe Mode, and repaired permissions. And then I booted into Recovery Mode, and repaired permissions. These didn't help.

Minutes after turning on the computer (and opening Mail, iTunes, Google Picasa, Tux Guitar and PDF file on Preview), the available memory is under 50mb. And Swap memory was at 5 GB! And I keep getting these messages on Console (opening and quitting Console is a hassle now since it is so slow...):

And here is the current memory status:

Wired: 1.09GB

Active: 3.37GB

Inactive: 3.52GB

Free; 20MB

Swap: 375MB/512MB

Page ins: 1.4mil

Page Outs: 30,987

How do I solve this issue?

Additional information: I edited 4K video on Final Cut Pro on my iMac 2 days ago, which used max available memory... I suspect using FCP somehow screwed up memory management on my iMac. I also did AHT, and everything came out fine.

Thanks in advance.

1. You are loading and running way to much stuff for 8GB of RAM.

2. You have a lot of failed processes for various reasons, including the lack of RAM.

3. That 21.5" iMac is basically an entry level model with only 8GB of fixed RAM and a 5400 RPM HDD.

The only real solution for that 21.5" model, is to cut back and run less stuff at the same time.

Optionally if you really need to run all of that stuff at the same time, then

1. you should have ordered a 21.5" with 16GB of RAM and a Fusion Drive or SSD.

2. bought a 27" with user upgradable RAM slots and a Fusion Drive or SSD.

Edit to add, I also just noticed that you also have a second partition on your HDD named New Mac OS...?

User uploaded file

If you are running from that New Mac OS partition, then the iMac will feel even slower because it is running on a slower part of the HDD.

What is everyone's thoughts on this? https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4637217?start=0&tstart=0

Dear Hampton, I have exactly the same problem with my MacBook Pro and it seems to be a RAM problem. I took it to the Genius Bar and sadly the truth, which the Genius bar guys were reluctant to admit, is that there are issues with the way the OS manages RAM, failing to clear Inactive memory and keep Free memory at a healthy level. If you go to the Activity Monitor and check the system memory I bet you will find that whenever you're seeing the "Exited: Killed: 9" lines one after the other as posted, you Free Memory would have been gobbled up by Inactive Memory. Extra memory would seem to be the permanent solution, sadly, and Apple charge an arm and a leg for it. Or you may have to live like I am at the moment, i.e. having the Activity Monitor permanently on the dock to keep an eye on Inactive Memory. When Inactive Memory gets too big I launch Terminal (Utilities) and type "purge." It frees up memory by clearig Inactive memory so that your machine's memory is as fresh as it is soon after you've started it. Good luck

I haven't seen these "memory status" Console messages until 2 days ago... Why happen now after all these years...?

The short answer is upgrade to 16GB, the max amount of RAM on your iMac. You bought an entry level machine and are running RAM intensive apps on it such as Autodesk and AVID. If you got the machine knowing you were going to use those apps that was an error, you should have chosen a 27" model that can at least upgrade to 32GB of RAM.

However what you can do in the short term is fix the startup items in System Preferences - Users & Accounts and NOT launch Adobe, Google & Valve. Also work on cleaning up the large amount of Internet Plugins.

My iMac used to handle MORE processes and apps simultaneously without any problem. My iMac was smooth and fast. Nothing changed for the past 2 days - same processes, same apps. But now there is spinning ball everywhere. And the fact that quitting apps like Console takes more than a minute is definitely not normal

Additional info: I haven't used/opened any AVID and Autodesk apps in that a year. The only intensive app I used was Chrome until I used FCP to edit 4k video 2 days ago.

Remembering how I used my iMac, I used to have around 10 desktops open (Autocad, Acrobat, Word, guitar tab apps, Reason 7, AmpKit, etc). I even played games while exporting a video. The computer handled it just fine. Exactly the same set-up as what is shown in the EtreCheck

Now the computer struggles to open basic apps like Mail...

So it's a HDD issue, not memory leak issue? How do I check for disk damage? Like I said, AHT returned no fault. Would DriveDx detect such damage?

Interestingly, my 2009 MBP is still fine after all the excessive paging, swapping and low memory (I run same apps on my MBP), and that is just tip of the iceberg of all the abuses that MBP went through...

The reports are not the same....

In the first report your Mac was running for almost one day and had 32MB of Free RAM.

(which is basically nothing left)

Which by the way, causes excess ware and tear on the drive as I explained earlier.

In the second and third reports your Mac was running for less than one hour and you had 3.87 GB and 1.49 GB respectively.

No failed processes.

I forgot to mention in my original post, but I did verify the disk in Recovery Mode and Safe Mode. Everything checked out OK.

And I just had an online chat with Apple support. Regarding disk damage from swapping/paging from lack of memory, I was told:

I doubt that your disk would be damaged by excessive use. It’s designed to be active more than it’s designed to be inactive. Creating a swap file is just using your hard drive space as RAM, which as far as the hard drive is concerned, is just accessing the data on the drive repeatedly.

That IS BAD too!

Processes that SHOULD be shuttled off to actual physical RAM modules, but is going to the hard drive, instead, means your iMac hasn't enough RAM to handle all of the active processes and tasks that you are asking it to do!

Those RAM processes that are sent to your hard drive process MUCH SLOWER than the almost instantaneous responses of electronic RAM circuiitry.

This means those operations being processed on hard drive ARE slowing your iMac down AND because these new slimline, smaller screen iMacs now have 5400 RPM laptop standard hard drives in them (instead of the "normal" and standard 7200 RPM Desktop computer standard hard drives, those RAM processes being processed from your iMac's 5400 RPM internal hard drive are being processed 33% slower than they would be from a 7200 RPM hard drive, which is STILL bad when operations and commands are processed almost instantly by your iMac's installed physical RAM.

You are simply overtaxing that iMac hardware with what you are trying to do!

Period!

Your iMac cannot handle everything you are attempting/trying to,throw at it!

This is why it is slow and will continue to BE slow!
