The 2012 MBPs will accept up to 16 GB RAM. Check with OWC and/or Crucial, the best sources for Mac compatible RAM, for the exact specifications.

Apple has a habit of not updating RAM specifications even when technological advancements allow for greater RAM capacity after the initial introduction of a given model.

I have the same MBP mid-2012 with i5 CPU and 16gb of ram and 500gb SSD.

Running dual boot Sierra / MS-Win-10.

Works great in both OS's . Performs very well.

Sierra will eat up 10-12gb of ram right a way.

So I recommend you get 16gb. Ram is cheap. I paid $65 however the price of ram has gone up lately do to a shortage.

So I recommend that since you are going to open up the MBP you might as well max it out with 16gb of ram.

I highly recommend you do a hardware refresh on your MBP with at least 8gb ram and a 256gb SSD.

Should only cost you about $150.

Your MBP will perform much better just like a new 2016 MBP.
