Our custodians found i-pod 2 in the bleachers after a basketball game. The i-pod was brought to our office and no one has claimed it for over 6 months. it asks for a Apple ID and password. Any suggestions. I hate to throw it away.

I"m afraid that throwing it away or dropping it off at an apple store or somewhere like Best Buy for recycling are your only two choices. What you're seeing is the activation lock, which requires the apple ID used to set up the device to unlock or wipe it. SInce you don't have that there's no way to use it. The activation lock was meant to be a theft deterrent system so there's no work around.
