Q: This item was not added to iCloud because an error occurred.

This exact question was initially asked in 2011. I have a few songs in my library with an exclamation point cloud symbol for the iCloud status. They are songs that I've imported to iTunes from other sources: one from an Amazon digital music purchase (the other 12 songs on the album are fine), one from a CD I ripped using iTunes (again it's only one song from the album), and one that's a single-song album from an independent digital music source. I tried the posted solution "create a copy of the song in iTunes" and it hasn't solved the problem I'm seeing. Instead of posting the song to iCloud, I just get the cloud with a slash through it for having a copy in my iCloud, and still no upload.

This problem is compounded by the fact that I'm using iTunes Match to use my library on my iPhone 6s Plus. Because iTunes Match won't allow you to sync your library directly to your phone, I must get songs into iCloud to listen to them on my phone.

To further complicate matters - I have two songs in my library that magically resolved this problem, but now have uploaded into iCloud. I say magically because right clicking "Add it iCloud Music Library" failed over and over again, and then worked for no apparent reason. However, they still won't download into my iPhone. Instead, they repeatedly fail and post a message : Unable to Download Songs and list "song title" and 1 other item whenever I change connection status on my phone from cellular to wifi. The options "Done" and "Retry" seem to mean retry again later and retry again right now. Only finding the song in my library and clicking the spinning circle make it stop asking - but only for a while. I have tried removing Match and iCloud Library from my phone - I walked through this with Apple support. When their solution failed to work I was told it's because the songs aren't available on iTunes.

I would really appreciate suggestions on how to resolve this, and better yet avoid this problem going forward.

I'm using Window 10, with iTunes 12.5.5.5, and iOS 10.2.1. As of 3-10-17, all the software says its fully up to date.

I found a solution to my problem. The iTunes 12.5.5.5 version does not properly connect to the internet when behind a corporate firewall - but only when trying to upload songs. You can still buy and download music from the iTunes Store, and Match tracks to iCloud. But uploading simply doesn't work until connected without being on a proxy server. Once the tracks are properly uploaded, all other problems with my library on my computer and phone went away.

I admit your post is too lengthy for me to have read and understood every word in detail. But this stands out:

This is not correct.

I simply get around this by using iTunes Match to communicate between my computer's iTunes and iCloud. But my iPhone has no knowledge that I am an iTunes Match subscriber. I simply sync music between iTunes on my computer and my iPhone as if I were not an iTunes Match subscriber.

On the iPhone, simply go to Settings > Music and turn off such items as "Show Apple Music" and "iCloud Music Library" and perform a normal sync to your computer's iTunes.

Thank you for your reply. I do agree that your work around solves one of the problems I'm experiencing. However, it comes at a cost I would rather not pay.

I enjoy playing from my entire Library while my phone is connected to wifi, and that's not possible with your solution. It would require a much more active management of the music on my phone than I would prefer.
