I need to add AVI files to a medical presentation on both keynote and powerpoint on my iMac. What is the best conversion software for this?

Tried Squared 5 and seemed to attempt to work, however no image appeared in the box after pressing play.
I thought there may be an app for this and found Smart Converter in the App Store. Simple to use and FREE.

I did that and watched it attempt to convert but it failed. Message: "Quick Time Player can't open xxxxxx.AVI".
I also have PowerPoint and when i try to insert the AVI file is says "The presentation contains old media formats that must be updated. There is and update button that appears, but does not update.
The same AVI does work on a PC version of Powerpoint without issue.
AVI is a Windows file type and can't be opened by Mac OS, hence the need to convert.

Convert the file, save it then drag and drop onto the Navigator (side panel on the left of the slide canvas) in Keynote .
Double click the file to open in Quicktime Player, let the file convert, then drag the file into Keynote.
