I'm trying to change the icon of a folder to a PNG that has some transparent area, but when i change the icon of the folder... it puts a white box around the image.... how do i get it to be just the PNG, and not the white box?
You'd have to edit around the "content" of the image — the part of the PNG you want — to extract that content from its white background using an app like Photoshop, e.g. use the Magic Wand or a path to select only the non-background parts, then copy that to a new image file with no background. You could also try erasing the white background on a pixel-by-pixel basis using the Eraser tools in Photoshop or Graphic Converter.
OK. I note that in the title bar of the Photoshop and Preview screen shots, it still appears with a white background.
You might want to try:
1. Saving it in a different format, e.g. JPEG, in Photoshop.
2. Creating a true icon out of the file using one of the available tools, such as Iconeer. Since you have Photoshop, you could try the directions in Alan Graham's article
"Creating Photorealistic Icons for Mac OS X."
