If jpegs or screenshots are used in „Mail“ as signatures, they are displayed in a rather mediocre quality. I tried several formats and sizes ... the result is always the same (= not good). If, however, you drop a screenshot directly from the finder into your email-message, then the quality is sharp and crisp. Why doesn't that work when jpegs/pngs are integrated in „Mail“-signatures?

I get the same problem. Why doesn't apple make it easy to do HTML eSignatures that actually look good and perhaps while we're at it, allow us to add functionality if we wanted to like making links hot and doing clean layouts for the e-signature?

The point was, the signature displays at twice the size of the original image.
this will work…
the difference could be caused by whether you're on a retina mac or not.
Send yourself both types of signature. Drag the resulting images into Preview for comparison, use 'Tools > Show Inspector'. You may be able to see a clear resolution or size difference.
Once you know the difference post it to Apple as a bug report…
Sorry, I misunderstood your post. It's early for me. I don't use signatures but I can test it in a bit and see what you mean. Meanwhile someone else may have an answer. It's either a resolution problem or a rendering issue.

It might look fine. But are you sure that it is really sharp. Try dragging the same jpeg directly into a message. It will appear crystal clear. But if you use it within a signature and open up a new message and choose the signature ... then it will appear somewhat blurred. At least that's my experience. Might be a rendering issue which Apple should solve. But I know: It's not a top priority issue. It will most likely never get solved.

It is an interesting glitch it seems to me.
I have 4 different signatures, some using mail, some using html. I do not experience this problem with mac mail.app
You do have more control with HTML signatures and your images can be loaded from a server.

I think this may help illustrate the problem…
I created a signature from the users first screenshot by cropping the "clear" bottom of the screenshot. When I added the png to a signature it displays at twice the size of the original png. In my screenshot here, captured directly from Mail, the top image is the "signature", the bottom is the png at actual size added to the same email.

Screenshots are .png files by default which is a lossless graphics file. jpgs are not. pngs should look ok.
In fact they do not. Screenshots appear crystal clear if you drag them directly into your message. But if you use them as part of a signature they appear somewhat blurred!
I tried to recreate the problem but I couldn't. When I add a .png file as a graphic element for a signature it looks fine.
Perhaps someone else knows.
As I said, I used a PNG file. JPGs would most likely look blurry. JPGs are compressed and don't hold up to scaling as well as PNGs do.
I used png-files, too – blurry. But thanks for giving this issue so much attention. Unfortunately I cannot upload screenshots. Otherwise I could demonstrate what I mean.
