It may be neither. You may have been close to some high powered item that emitted a lot of energy that caused interference. What you describe is typical of such a problem ... which of course disappears the moment you move out of range,
I own an iPhone 7. A few hours ago, I was listening to music and everything was working. All of a sudden, when the music paused without myself touching the screen or anything, it started to play very loud static noises. (I pressed the "Play" button on the screen and it started making the noise.) It hurt my ears a lot. I'm sure that the earphones are not the issue, since they work perfectly fine with my iPad. I'm guessing that the problem is the adapter. The question is: Is it really the adapter, or my iPhone 7?

Oh nevermind. I used someone else's adapter and it worked fine.
