MSN Messenger, can't remove from startup list

When I unmark msn messenger in the startup list, the next time I boot up, somehow an additional copy is placed there and starts up. A subsequent reboot displays the message that there are two copies of msn messenger, and ask if I want to delete one of them. How can I turn it off completely, alternatively how to delete it permanently?

Hi, pinkarrow -

Welcome to Apple's Discussions.

Are you referring perhaps to a file in the Startup Items folder (in System Folder)? Disabling an item such as that in Extensions Manager, or physically removing it, will often, but not always, work.

Sometimes it is necessary to disable (uncheck) all associated control panels and extensions; you can do that in Extensions Manager.

For example, the installation of AOL Instant Messenger adds a menu to the main menu bar; the only way to get rid of that critter is to disable the extension named AIM Menu.

If you're not sure whether a control panel or extension is related to MSN Messenger, look in the Package column for that item in Extensions Manager - the 'package' info identifies what software that item came with or was installed by.

I believe you have to go to MSN Messenger's preferences, and disable the option to "always run this program..." under general. You may then have to disable its extention too, but I don't think so.

Also, this will disable the ability to close the contact list and stay signed in. It's annoying, I know, but you can always just hide it.

That should work.
