Apple Mail Crashing Upon Opening

I am running MacOS Sierra 10.12.3 on my Imac.

This morning I went to shuffle a few folders, using 'drag and drop' out of a Gmail folder to an 'on my Mac' folder.

Now Mail keeps just quitting about 2-5 seconds after I open it.

It seems to still be functioning (can see new email come in and can navigate it for the few seconds its open) just it still keeps quitting.

I have shut down/rebooted the computer a few times, to no avail.

It has not finished transferring the dragged and dropped files and I assume this is the issue, but how do I stop it from quitting?

Thanks in advance,

Aaron

Not sure how I get to Steps2-3 if it wont stay open?

You won't be able to. Since you already determined the same problems exist in "Safe Mode" that eliminates that step.

The next one would be to reinstall macOS, though I seriously doubt it will resolve the problem. Since it is nondestructive to your User Account data it's harmless enough to try though: How to reinstall macOS - Apple Support. Be sure to skip Step 2 (because you are not going to be erasing the information on that Mac).

If that does not work, the next logical step would be to completely erase that particular Mail account and add it again. To do that please read Mail for Mac: Set up Mail with your email accounts and follow the instructions for Remove an account.

You will want to be sure those email messages are safely backed up before doing that, but as long as they are limited to your Google Mail account, Google will retain copies that will remain available after adding the account back to Mail. To add that same email account again, follow Add an account in that same Apple Support document.

If that does not work... Contact Support.

Do a backup, preferably 2 on 2 separate drives.

Quit Mail.

Go to Finder and select your user/home folder. With that Finder window as the front window, either select Finder/View/Show View options or go command - J. When the View options opens, check ’Show Library Folder’. That should make your user library folder visible in your user/home folder. Go to Library/Containers/com.apple.mail. Move the folder com.apple.mail to your desktop. You must move the entire folder, not just the contents.

Restart, re-launch Mail and test. If the problem is solved, recreate any required Mail settings and import any emails you want to save from the folder on the desktop. You can then put the folder in the Trash. If the problem remains, return the folder to where you got it replacing the one that is there.

If that doesn’t solve it repeat the above using Containers/com.apple.MailServiceAgent.

Mail crashing

Crashes/quits unexpectedly

Hi John,

Thank you for the reply.

I should start by saying I'm a computer hack. Not my strong point so bear with me!

I followed the Step1 instruction in your link (open Mail holding Shift) but it makes no difference. Mail opens, looks normal then quits. I tried holding shift and opening, opening then hitting **** immediately, etc. Not sure how I get to Steps2-3 if it wont stay open?

I'm also not sure it related to any one message, as for the few seconds it open, I can navigate around different email, folders, etc.

I also tried shutting down and opening my iMac in Safe Mode. I've never used safe mode before, everything looked the same, but it was very responsibly slow with lots of screen flickering (I assume that means safe mode?). Mail opened and quit, much the same, only slower.

Unfortunately, it looks like I'll have to skip tot he redo all my email accounts stage.

Despite being in the suburbs of Melbourne Australia, our fasted ADSL2 speed is 3Mbs, averaging <1.5Mbs, and at this moment 0.8Mbs.

So the system just wont download the OS for reinstall.

I tried hot-spot to my mobile (usually much faster but way less data), but it did not like that either.

After hitting "continue" to start the download, it just freezes until I get the message "download failed".

Next issue, is as I noted earlier, I'm not super tech savy. Not too long ago, I had to rebuild al my mail accounts due to ISP/server issue. It took ages, I had to get IT help from my ISP and my emails (mostly business) and Mail folder system were all messed-up/lost.

I cringe at having to go through that painful process yet again simply due Mail software glitched. And mind you, Mail has been faultless ever since I transitioned to Apple five years ago.

A question... if I delete all of my many email accounts... is there a process I can use to save them in their current condition, and, be able to get back to that after redoing them all? As noted ea;rier, I did drop a copy of the User/Library Mail folder as backup.

You can archive your existing Mail messages. To do that copy the folder ~/Library/Mail as you wrote. To restore its contents, use Mail's Import Mailboxes... function and select that archived folder.

Mail Account information is stored separately, in /Library/Containers. If you archive the com.Apple.Mail folder you should not have to manually enter all your account information again.

Having said that, if you already rebuilt the suspect Mailboxes and/or the problematic Account(s) and that did not resolve the problem, importing the Mailboxes may restore the problem as well.

Thank you for the replies everyone. Its been fixed, so I thought best to update this thread, as the fix was not from one of the responses here.

To be honest, I was very nervous about reinstalling the OS, resetting all email accounts, etc. It all sounded very extreme. So I ended up calling Apple support here in Australia.

I got on to two very very helpful techs, Cooper and Ricky (thank you guys, can recommend highly enough), that spent a long time on the phone with me and were very patient.

Although I am not overly techy, my gut feeling was confirmed in that earlier in the day when I tried to 'drag and drop' a Gmail storage folder (not inbox folder) to an On My Mac folder, some kind of sync issue began that was causing Mail to quit. That's why it ran and downloaded just fine, but as Mail went to then try and sync to Gmail..... crash.

It did take us a while to work out and I lost a whole day of work, but once we worked out that Mail was fine on my other devices and fine on the suspect iMac (so long as the Gmail account was inactive) the fix was simple. Delete Gmail email account from Mail and then re-add it (Now also called Google).

Just to be safe, I also did the same on my MacBook Air.

Thanks again to the support here and from Apple. My faith is returned ;-)
