I downloaded some random file on the internet when I was trying to download mp3 file.

After download this file(that I can check from System Information > Software > Installations > Gill_Chang_blahblah.mp3-2145638

User uploaded file

I checked all remove tutorial that do something with internet browser but none of them worked.

I think the only solution is to delete this file from system.

Is there anyone knows how to do this?

MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Late 2013), macOS Sierra (10.12.3)

I believe System Information "Installations" gets it information from the file "InstallHistory.plist" in Macintosh HD/Library/Receipts folder.

I've selected an application that was removed awhile back and if you use Finder's search it still shows up in the Plist.

The item under System Information - Installations shows as

You might be able to find out more about your file and possibly it's location by searching the InstallHistory.plist or the Receipts folder itself - but would make a copy on the desktop of the plist before doing so, just incase you muck anything up.

As well as ClamAV I also have numerous refs to Adobe Flash Player - again removed from the system a long time ago.

Hope this helps.

I found this file from System Information > Software > Installations > Gill_Chang_blahblah.mp3-2145638

While System Information puts what (confusingly) looks like a path at the bottom for an item you highlight, that's not what it is. It's a reference to its own left hand panel.

You can see that same confusing "path" in action here. The actual file location, as shown towards the bottom right, happens to be in the Applications/Utilities folder, but the bottom "path" is again referencing its own left panel, not a file path.

You can prove that's what System Information is doing by selecting something that is not in the Applications folder. It simply repeats Software > Applications again, even though the actual location is within the System folder.

I see it from the attached screenshot but I can't drag/delete it from this page.

The System Information panel is not live. You can't move or delete files from there. Information only.

from the file "InstallHistory.plist" in Macintosh HD/Library/Receipts folder.

I checked that, too. But it's pretty useless information. Nothing in that file, or System Information under the Installations heading tells you where a file is on the drive.

EasyFind (linked to above by Eric Root) is a far superior tool for finding anything, anywhere on a drive. Hidden or not. I use it constantly.

It was just a log shot, you would think with the OS seemingly creating so many logs and preferences now a days, some trace would be left behind from the installation to help locate the thing.

With respect to EasyFind was going to give it a try but couldn't help notice that the App Store lists v4.9.3 (the latest) as having improvements for Mountain Lion and Mavericks - is it still fully compatible with Sierra because the last update was back in July 2014?

So just to be clear, you have tried the two search programmes suggested by Eric which failed to find the actual file itself (that would then indicate the file does not now exist - i.e. you may have previously removed it!), you then looked in the "Receipts" folder and discovered a ref to that file and deleted that and then finally you trashed the "InstallHistory.plist" file.

I wasn't advocating the deletion of the plist because I was not sure on how "System Information" uses that file or how it's created, but if that has worked and a new "InstallHistory.plist" has appeared you may have resolved your issue.

How the "InstallHistory.plist" is updated could be important, i.e. is it revised from the actual install process of applications or does it get it's info from within the "Receipts" folder - if it's the former you may have now lost some additional information about previously installed applications, looking at "System Information - Installations" should confirm if that is the case.

Eric, John and the others may comment on this, I certainly would appreciate some thoughts on how the file is created and if it's removal could have any additional consequences.
