How can I open CurrentProject.fcpproject in FCPX 10.3.2?

I have an old project (created in a previous version -- I can't even remember which one, but I'm pretty sure it was in late 2014/early 2015), and now I need to recut it. I am currently using 10.3.2, and I can't even open the old project. Any ideas? Many thanks!!

Thank you, Ben. Unfortunately, I don't quite get it. I had actually been to the page you referenced (a search had sent me there), but I didn't understand how it applied to my situation. Even when I created a new empty library, I still couldn't open the old project - it's grayed out. What does it mean to "update it to a Library"? Sorry to be so dense, but I would really appreciate he help!!

Many thanks,

Deb

Since there is FCP X, the workflow has never been to directly open a project (you CAN'T double-click on CurrentProject.fcpproject to open a project).

In 10.0.*, projects had to be placed inside a specifically named folder to be seen by FCP X.

Since 10.1, projects exist inside documents, which are called *libraries*. Libraries have the four-star icon, and they CAN be opened by double-clicking, they can be closed, and copied in the Finder to almost anywhere.

In order to use that project, it needs the surrounding structure, not just a file.

It appears to me that this project is from old 10.0.*. In order to update such an old thing - assuming you still have it with the rest of the structure, including the corresponding events - you need to get a copy of 10.2.3 Trial version.

10.3 has dropped the ability to update those old projects.

The old project's folder needs to be in the "official" location where FCP X 10.0 would have required: inside a folder called exactly "Final Cut Projects", that has to be either directly inside the user's Movies folder, or at the very top level of an external hard drive. The same thing for events: "Final Cut Events" folder, in the same location.

Then, from insider FCP X 10.2.3, choose File->Update Projects and Events, and select the drive that contains those folders (not the folders themselves). If all is well, FCP X will create a new library containing the updated stuff. The old stuff is not deleted.

OK, I feel like I'm getting closer, and I'm grateful to you for sticking with me. I put the project file in a folder called Final Cut Projects, which I put in my Movies folder. Unfortunately, as I have found every time I have looked at the trial version or any other version of FCPX, there is no "Update Projects and Events" under File or anywhere else that I can see.

The plot thickens:

I got the 10.2.3 trial.

I couldn't find a corresponding event to the old project (I must have just saved the project and the media files), and it wouldn't update without an event file.

Since I had another folder in Movies that had in it a Final Cut Projects folder and a Final Cut Events folder, I moved them up to the root level and added my old project to the Final Cut Projects folder. Then I ran the update.

I'm sure you're thinking, "What an idiot!" because of course everything updated fine except my old project has COMPLETELY DISAPPEARED.

Is it gone forever?
