Why get an iPod over an iPad for Kids?

I am putting this question in iPod forum because I think you may have the best advice.

I am looking at two options.

Option 1

Buy my 3 kids ages 8-10 each an iPod to use as there general music, learning/education device etc. I plan on locking it down so they can not surf the web, download games etc. It will really just be an education tool with access to music. The main downside is that it does not do Dreambox which is used by kids school. The upside is that is cheaper than an iPad and smaller (more portable).

Option 2

Plan be would be to get them each an iPad, configured the same way with Dreambox.

If we go with either option we have an older iPad that we will use for games so they will have access to that when they earn the time. But the idea will be that non-educational games will only be played here.

What do you think of this approach? Option 1 or 2?

If you're planning on them to use it for school and education, then the larger screen of hte ipad will be better. My eyes cringe at the thought of reading something off a tiny ipod screen.

You could always go for ipad mini's, so smaller but still functional as a normal iPad, and kinda bridges the cost between an ipod and iPad. THe battery life on an iPad is also better. My ipod can't even make it though a day without needing to be charged while my ipad does quite well.
