iTunes 12.6 very slow to start/run and not accessing store after update on Windows 7

I'm on Windows 7 SP1 with all the available updates for my OS installed, and installed the 12.6 update for iTunes the other night.

The next morning I noticed that when I started iTunes, that while it looked to have loaded up my cursor was just spinning over it. About 10 minutes later it was allowing me to go in and edit my playlists so I thought that was just something weird and moved on.

Later though, I saw that my podcasts weren't updating and that when I attempt to go to the store to manually download them I was getting the same behavior as on startup (seems to lock-up, cursor spinning) though it never loads into the store and the main area just stays white.

I should note that I can download podcasts "manually" on my iPod, sync that with iTunes to transfer the podcasts to my computer, edit my playlists and then sync my iPod again to get this going. Though even then during the sync things aren't showing up properly (I see files appear on my iPod well before the "copying files" stage of the sync starts on iTunes).

Things I've tried to fix this:

1. Run the iTunes installer again in case something was broken during the install. No change.

2. Do a System Restore to several days back as I couldn't find a 12.5.x installer for iTunes to rollback with. No change.

3. Restart system multiple times during multiple little tests that had no change to the behavior.

As I've seen a few other threads that seem similar to mine here, though in those it seems like iTunes won't start at all so mine is getting a little further, with people after the 12.6 update I thought I'd see if anyone has any suggestions or knows of a fix/workaround to the behavior to get iTunes up and running again.

Use the programs and features control panel to uninstall each of these items in this order:

  1. iTunes
  2. Apple Software Update
  3. Apple Mobile Device Support
  4. Bonjour
  5. Apple Application Support 32-bit
  6. Apple Application Support 64-bit

Reboot the computer

Use Windows Explorer to open your iTunes folder inside your user's Music folder

Select the file iTunes Library then press F2 on the keyboard and rename it as iTunes Library (Old)

Open the Previous iTunes Libraries folder

Select the file iTunes Library 2017-mm-dd and press Ctrl+C top copy it, the exact filename will be when you updated

Go back to the iTunes folder

Press Ctrl+V to paste

Press F2 to rename and change the filename to iTunes Library

Follow the iTunes installers link and choose the relevant 32-bit or 64-bit version of iTunes 12.5.5.5 to reinstall, download it & install

Please feel free to post back if you need me to explain any of the steps in more detail.

Oh my, that's too bad to hear!

Apart from the fact that downgrading is merely a workaround instead of a fix, this of course makes things more troublesome.

How was your iTunes setup? Did you use the itunes media folder for your music or did you have it on another hard disk?

You could check the itunes media (/music in some cases) folder if the files are still there.

In windows explorer in the left navigation pane, navigate to your Music library, search for itunes folder. There should be either a folder named "iTunes Media" or "iTunes music". If it's the first: click it and open the folder "music".
If all your music and media is still there I would strongly suggest to copy it to another disk first so that you have a backup of the original files. Always welcome if iTunes decides to mess things up.

I'm affraid there's no option to "downgrade" the library itself so that it's readable again. Once it's "touched" by 12.6 there's no going back it seems (thanks for that Apple).

What you could try is see if iTunes made a backup of your library in the folder "Previous iTunes Libraries". If all went well there should be one made on the date you performed the update.
Now start iTunes itself again by first pressing the <shift> key and keep it pressed until iTunes comes with a popup, asking you about libraries. You could try "Choose" and you''ll see that folder "Previous iTunes Libraries" if all is well.
Select the one with the date of the update, open it and hope for the best!

That worked! I was able to choose a file from a couple of days ago. Thanks so much!!

Great. If however you're now using the file inside the Previous iTunes Libraries folder you're probably going to run into issues if you need to troubleshoot or move the library in future. You should (with iTunes close) copy the working itl file to the main iTunes library folder, rename it to iTunes Library (iTunes Library.itl if you can see the file extensions) and then shift-start-iTunes to reconnect to it.

Problem's solved here as well.
Indeed needed to remove the complete prior installation and after a reinstall things worked again as they should.

Strange thing was I have a windows 7 64 bit laptop as well that didn't display this problem so I still had access to store features. Syncing my ipad/iphone however was a problem since I couldn't use my library (that was on my pc, had sharing to network enabled).

Ah well, glad it's working again.

Many thanks to all posters here, with special thanks to tt2 for his excellent contributions.

Hi,

After i update iTunes with this version (12.6.3.6), the program will 'hang' for few minutes and unable to load App Store.

I don't have this issue for previous version (12.6.2.20).

Here is 'Run Diagnostics' result.

Please advise.
