LG 5k image retention normal

Hello,

In January I received a LG 5k ultra fine and a MacBook Pro 15". I am very happy with the image quality, but these days when using for example Pages or Safari and wiping to dashboard, the display has signs of image retention and I can clearly see the pattern of used windows an text shades. This effects occurs very quickly, it just needs to place a few minutes a static image/window on the screen and after it on some backgrounds I can clearly see the image retention, which disappears in less than a minute. This effect itself doesn't bother me too much, but I am afraid that this could be a defect, that could get worse with time.

So what do you think? Is this a inherent behaviour of this kind of technology or could this be defect, so that it needs to be changed?

Best regards

MacBook Pro, macOS Sierra (10.12.3)

Hi Adam. Cool, thanks for the info again. I'm on hold with Apple's online store as I type (I purchased my monitor on Apple.com, so a staff at my local Apple store told me to try calling 1-800-MY-APPLE before calling LG just to see if they'll do anything on their end first). I have a feeling I'll be calling LG shortly after this phone call, though.

Glad to hear LG is going to help get your monitor repaired. It's too bad you'll be without the monitor for 3 weeks, but I suppose it'll be worth it to get it repaired.

Quick question regarding your image retention issue... how long after you started using the monitor did you begin to notice the image retention issue? In my case, I received the monitor in January. All worked fine until I started noticing the issue about 2-3 weeks ago (so for me, it began after about 2 months of regular usage).

Good luck with everything. Hope your monitor has a speedy recovery.

Hi Cassy, Well, I called LG yesterday and they answered quickly. They know the problem with the shielding and after getting my details, they are sending me a shipping label. Standard repair times are listed as 7-10 work days and for some reason it takes them 3 days to send me a label. I am guessing with all that I'll be out of a monitor for 3 weeks (maybe 4?). We'll see.

Hello Cassy,

I am also not sure about the moment, in which the image retention started. My case is pretty the same like yours, since I noticed the IR after about 2 month. But I think that its posible that the effect was there from the first moment, because at normal use you don't notice it at all. Only if you know, that it exists, you will notice it more and more…

Hi Cassy. I hope you got resolution from Apple online. They told me in no uncertain terms that I had to go through LG. They were frankly rude about it.

As for the image retention, it's only happened recently, too. I told LG about it, and they said they'd fix that, too.

All in all, I think we're suffering from Apple experimenting -and failing- at something right now. Apple is not going to have these LG monitors more than a few more months. Recent reports state that Apple has decided to re-dedicate themselves to the professional arena (which I am) and will start building their OWN monitors again by the end of the year in combination with a new, upgradeable and modular Mac Pro suggests to me that this current lineup of MacBook Pros and LG monitors will be chalked up to a mistake. An expensive one on our part, though. https://www.macrumors.com/2017/04/05/apple-no-plans-for-touchscreen-or-arm-based -macs/

I'll let you know how long it takes to return to me and if everything is fixed or not. Good luck on your end!

Hi Adam,

Thanks for that info. Gosh, you're right about it being an expensive mistake on our part. I'm a designer, so I also use my computer in the professional arena. I'm hoping that Apple does decide to start building their own monitors again. I still have my old 27" LED Cinema Display by Apple, so worst-case scenario, I suppose I can revert back to that (with the help of the USB-C to Mini Displayport adapter I had to order on eBay).

Regarding my LG Ultrafine 5k monitor, Apple online directed me to contact LG. They weren't rude about it, but they did say that I, unfortunately, had to go through LG for my issue. I called LG shortly after that call, and they started a claim process for me. I had to upload a proof of purchase online and now I'm waiting for them to review my case and contact me for next steps. The LG rep I spoke to said that my monitor might fall under a manufacturer's defect (this is another reason why they asked for the proof of purchase), but he's not 100% sure. I'll just have to wait until they contact me and we'll go forward with the repair or replacement at that time. So yep, that's what's happening on my end. Regardless if they end up repairing or replacing my monitor, they will be addressing both the image retention and the shielding issues.

Thanks again, and good luck to you as well.

Hey Adam,

Great! Glad to hear you got your monitor back and that it's working well so far. 🙂

I just got a box w/shipping label in the mail yesterday from LG, so my monitor is all packed up and ready to be shipped back to them. Shipping might take a little longer for me since I'm located in Hawaii, but hopefully, things will go as smoothly for me as it did for you.

Keep me posted if you notice anything else with your monitor.

Thanks Adam. I ended up calling LG and they had me send my monitor back to them for a second repair. It took a bit longer this time around, but I finally got my monitor back yesterday, and thankfully, it seems that they addressed the issue. I haven't been getting any image retention as of yet, so that's definitely a great sign. Hopefully it stays this way. Hope all is well with your monitor as well.
