Clearing Safari website data does not delete everything - iPhone

One would expect "clear history & website data" from safari would do just that, but that's not always the case.

Often, in my case, there are persistent data that survive the "clear." Usually from Twitter or Facebook, but sometimes from random sites I've visited. I have the Twitter App installed, but not Facebook or other sites that keep showing up.

This doesn't clear them:

Settings>Safari>Clear History and Website Data

Neither does this:

Settings>Safari>Advanced>Website Data>Remove All Website Data

This does work:

Individually swiping left on the persisting data and selecting "delete"

This, IMO, is an unusual behavior since the first method SHOULD do this job.

Most people won't go to ...advanced>website data> to double check if the clearing worked.

I suspect these are similar to "databases" that remain in Desktop Safari and have to be manually removed from

user/library/safari/databases (I had to remove a homedepot.com data that would keep reappearing.)

So the Question: Is this a normal behavior? Does this happen to others?

Benchmarks only test the hardware capability, not the perfomance of application ie Safari, etc.

I am an automation engineer and programmer with over 35 years experience. I am speaking to my experience and reflecting thousands and thousands of others similar experience. When safari becomes unusable after and ios update, something is dreadfullt wrong. Not sure why your offended by the truth.

Again, Futuremark is a test of hardware, not individual applications.

I'm not offended. I don't really care if you want to believe something silly. I'll keep trying to help people who actually want it.

Best of luck.

**** Again, factually a benchmark is merely testing the hardware. I stated that App,e Hardware is not the problem, the problem is the ios softwsre updates. I have many years of developing software and firmware for realtime os systems. Critical operations for defense industry, factory automation, etc.

I know for a fact that software and firmware can affect performance, i have seen it in my own code and in that of other. Apple, for example, has terrible javascript implementation which causes instability in Safari.

Posting a link to futuremark means nothing to the users you are "trying to help".

I'm surprised that you are at level 9 and post such a rude & demeaning response. If your not able to be polite please don't participate.

There are benchmarks, and there are real life experiences. When on relatively fresh install of iOS the settings app takes 10 seconds to load, and letters show up with 1 second delay after typing on keyboard, no amount of impressive graphs and Apple friendly blog posts can cover that reality.

And please, lets get back to safari cookie issues, as it is still an issue. Slow downs are off topic (I'm guilty as well)

I am not denying that people have problems with their phone. What I will continue to contest is the ridiculous notion that Apple is intentionally slowing down phones as some sort of plot to get people to buy new phones. In addition to being ridiculous, it also discourages people from looking for real solutions.

These charts represent the performance of hardware (CPU/GPU) not the OS/UI.

iphone 5 has 1 GB RAM

iphone 7 has 2 GB RAM

An OS that is optimized for iphone 7 will be very slow on iPhone 5 & 6.

None of the benchmarks test the UI response times, RAM usage,...

And no one is claiming the CPU/GPU is slowed down/clocked down

If tweaking & disabling individual features cannot make is run smoothly on an older device, that OS shouldn't be offered at all (forced by annoying messages.)

The "experts" here are saying that fruit is still round, so it must still taste good.

I don't think anyone claims they have written proof of such strategy.

When Apple

Is in the position to test these devices with new OS -> knows about performance issues

Relentlessly pushes users to update/upgrade with constant notifications until they do

Does not allow reverting back to older OS (regardless of reasons)

**Does not issue updates to fix slowed down older devices

Is under pressure too boost sales of new devices

and

The suspect updates coincide with release of new hardware

Slowed performance of older devices leads to increase sales of new devices

...

what other conclusion would a realist make?

Does "negligence that leads to increased profitability" a better way of putting it?

I am and have been having this same issue for some time now. I have the iphone 7 and I JUST updated to iOS 11.2.2 an hour ago and I still have the problem. I have 6 websites that won’t delete some of which I have never even visited. They are all 0kb but the issue isn’t just the fact that I can’t delete them, it’s the fact that since I haven’t been able to delete them, whenever I get in safari, I get the “congratulations iPhone user! You have just won a gift card!!!....” pages almost every time I am on there. Personally, I think it’s related to this website data bug. Was wondering if anyone has had any luck yet getting this fixed. I was hoping this new update would fix the issue but clearly it hasn’t. It’s shameful that Apple has so many issues anymore. Steve Jobs is probably looking down with disgust and I don’t blame him.

Yeah it definitely makes me wonder! I’m no software or computer genius but I know that it’s not right when things stick around after deletion. The only other time this ever happened to me was on a PC and it turned out to be a virus in the form of registration codes that implanted itself onto the factory restoration somehow. Basically, I couldn’t get rid of it no matter how hard I tried. Even the Geek Squad we’re powerless to this virus or whatever it was. So I hate it when I delete things and they don’t go away. 🙄

I recommend you fill out this form as someone else was mentioning on the forum thread named (Gus) this might help Apple to find a solution quickly. The more reports they have of this software bug the faster they can patch it. I tried restoring my iPhone to factory settings still didn't work so now I gonna try resetting all settings and see if that works.

Good luck

Thanks for the info, I'm not familiar with the rules in beta.

Does anyone think Apple with solve this website data problem, because the list keeps getting bigger and bigger.

No one here knows Apple's future plans and speculation is prohibited by the Terms of Use to which we all agreed when we signed up. What you should do is let Apple know this is a problem for you. They don't read here.
