Clearing Safari website data does not delete everything - iPhone

One would expect "clear history & website data" from safari would do just that, but that's not always the case.

Often, in my case, there are persistent data that survive the "clear." Usually from Twitter or Facebook, but sometimes from random sites I've visited. I have the Twitter App installed, but not Facebook or other sites that keep showing up.

This doesn't clear them:

Settings>Safari>Clear History and Website Data

Neither does this:

Settings>Safari>Advanced>Website Data>Remove All Website Data

This does work:

Individually swiping left on the persisting data and selecting "delete"

This, IMO, is an unusual behavior since the first method SHOULD do this job.

Most people won't go to ...advanced>website data> to double check if the clearing worked.

I suspect these are similar to "databases" that remain in Desktop Safari and have to be manually removed from

user/library/safari/databases (I had to remove a homedepot.com data that would keep reappearing.)

So the Question: Is this a normal behavior? Does this happen to others?

Hi, Yes, my phones is update to date.

Note this problem is happening on Ipads, iPhones and iMacs. I have managed to remove the cookies on my iMac by delete the databases in "~/library/safari/databases" and the file Cookies.binarycookies in "~/Library. However, unless you jail break your iPhone/iPad you can't get at these folders.

I have raised the problem with Apple requesting a fix, I suggest you do the same.

Really? Smh. Ok I'll bite. For the same reason I hate commercials; why I don't like solicitation phone calls; the unhealthy rise in blood pressure I deal with when pursued by ****** via e-mail who've paid someone else to tap into my so-called private life to find out my habits, ones of which I've no shame, simply no interest in an uninvited guest trying to tag along. "Time is the one thing which cannot be created or destroyed". When you come to internalize that quote, not just intellectually but fully and completely know it's meaning, is the same time you'll decide it should be you in control of your life, not big brother or any facsimile thereof. End of story.

FInally managed to clear website data but you probably won't like my solution. Initially tried reset to an earlier back-up but data still there. As last resort did a full reset under settings/general/reset/erase all content and settings...website data GONE..obviously I now need to reload all my apps etc. Apple really needs to find a urgent solution to this problem or it will just keep happening.

I have the same problem on my iPhone & iPad i.e. the URLs with 0 Bytes do not clear from Safari.

This problem started after the upgrade to OS 10.3.1

On my iPad macys.com 0 Bytes remains & on my iPhone ikea.com 0 Bytes. So, this is not all the sites I visited. Obviously the rest cleared up. This is only happening for some sites.

OS 10.3.1 has many problems. Here is another big one which maybe related to the above:

After the OS update my devices rebooted and while going through that I turned on the Analytics, as it was pushed. I later turned it off on both of my devices but a whole bunch of stuff has appeared in General, Privacy, Analytics, Analytics Data which I have no idea how to clear.

Oh and the new OS also causes sudden battery drain on my husbands older iPhone 6. Ugh

Here is a note to Apple: when you provide an OS update it should be a better version of its predecessor and not not cause problems that did not previously exist.

I don't like the control and invasions of privacy you are trying to implement. Steve Jobs would not have stood for it if he were alive

Honestly Apple needs to patch this bug because it's been an ongoing issue since iOS 9 and I really just dread it so much !! it's really annoying. I feel like it is just a bug that occurs because it can't recognize the cookies are gone from the safari database and just won't perish. However, as for the iPhone 6 issue that maybe a problem with the battery odometer itself he might need to restore the device to factory settings under general and reset. I seemed to have that issue myself as well I'd have like 18% battery still left and my iPhone 6 would just shut off on me. Recently upgraded to the 7 and haven't had that issue. It seems like a 6/6s bug because I was reading an article about it on Snapchat. However if you do all the troubleshooting with the iPhone and it still persists try making an appointment to the Genius Bar the folks over there are always glad to help and they can run diagnostics on it for free to determine the issue and if it's a factory issue they might even be able to compensate him with a replacement for free because I think they had a recent recall on some of those models if I'm not mistaken. I had heard it on the news few months back that they were doing recalls on some iPhone 6s models because of a potential battery issues. Hope this feedback helps...

Analytics Data goes away when you backup your device with iTunes . Check it afterwards and you will see it's gone

Doesn't fix the website data though , sigh

There is a temporary solution, if you have a blocker:

I use 1Blocker and if you don't need to go back to the website who left you the pesky cookie-data, it's possible to block the website forever.

Exactly what I did with chefd.com. I never visited the website voluntarily and I guess I got it probably from a news website, who knows!

This way, at least, I block the website entirely 😠

I have been battling with this problem of not being able to clear the website data and cookies, right through to setting up machine as new which appeared to work OK. Have spent hours on it, including hours on the phone with Apple support. Until a few days ago when another rogue "cookie" appeared which I couldn´t delete. This morning tried another way - out of desperation - which got rid of it and I wait to see if it works. Quite simply I went into the website that I couldn´t delete. Cleared history using the open book icon on that website page - History, Clear, All time. Then clicked on top right icon to reduce the website size on the screen in order to delete it clicking on delete at top of it. Then double clicked on button on ipad frame in order to swipe up and close any open windows. Checked back through to settings, delete data cookies, advanced.. website data.... gone! Fingers crossed.

as of June/May 07' I am also having this issue with my iPad 4. These "Super Cookies" just won't go. All 4 of them are 0 KB and I've tried everything short of a rollback (I.e., resetting memory, restarting, clearing history, removing individually, Blocking all cookies/Java/Turning off Wifi then removing individually, removing any bookmarks to said website, then removing each one individuall, ect...)

as others have indicated, it seems to have to do with the most recent update, since I've had stubborn cookies before, but never this stubborn. I'm currently up-to-date on my IOS (which as we know, is usually a mistake), which was the harbinger of these 'super cookie' issues.

currently, my 4 unremovable cookies are (all which claim to be 0 bytes):

1. Amazon.com

2. Michaels.com

3. eBay.com

4. Netrunnerdb.com (which is a non-malevolent board game resource site)

and while none of them are malevolent sites, the fact that their cookies won't disapear indicates something Isn't right.

please fix Apple. Thank you.
