Clearing Safari website data does not delete everything - iPhone

One would expect "clear history & website data" from safari would do just that, but that's not always the case.

Often, in my case, there are persistent data that survive the "clear." Usually from Twitter or Facebook, but sometimes from random sites I've visited. I have the Twitter App installed, but not Facebook or other sites that keep showing up.

This doesn't clear them:

Settings>Safari>Clear History and Website Data

Neither does this:

Settings>Safari>Advanced>Website Data>Remove All Website Data

This does work:

Individually swiping left on the persisting data and selecting "delete"

This, IMO, is an unusual behavior since the first method SHOULD do this job.

Most people won't go to ...advanced>website data> to double check if the clearing worked.

I suspect these are similar to "databases" that remain in Desktop Safari and have to be manually removed from

user/library/safari/databases (I had to remove a homedepot.com data that would keep reappearing.)

So the Question: Is this a normal behavior? Does this happen to others?

Gary6, might be just a frustrating, futile exercise. Have you filled out Apple's feedback comment form?

No response if any coming yet from Apple. But maybe if the numbers of comments start stacking up Apple might consider dealing with this problem.

TheApplefallsfarfromthetree, thanks for your suggestion. Tried. No luck. But not running the latest OS X. Afraid to upgrade and lose Aperature plus the NIK plug-ins used. iMac is basically a photo processor. Little used for internet.

True that Gary. I've given up on Apple. Sadly I was one of their most staunch supporters. I give, handing the torch to anyone willing to continue the push. I've the feeling that capitalism has won the war in a corporation who kicked its *** for decades. Fight the good fight my friend. Just remember to save yourself for the next battle if you want to win the war. I fell on my sword for this one. Apple disavowed my last message in this regard. Big brother stompted his might foot upon my passion to save his kingdom. I'm done. Ta ta.

Hi,

I know this is a bit tedious but it works.

1. Set cookies to allow

2. Make a list of all the websites that won't erase from your website data.

3. Visit each site (on safari) doing the following steps.

4. Once you have safari open with the website that is storing data on your device, leaving the window open (press home screen button)

5. Open: settings>safari>advanced>website data

6. Swipe the current website that is open in safari

7. Delete

8. Click back twice

9. Double click home screen button and close safari first then close your settings window

10. Repeat steps for remaining website data stored on your device.

This may be a late answer, however the 'stuck"website data resides in the Safari Databases folder. Us the Option Key plus the GO selection on the Finder menu to open a dialogue box. Select Library, go to the Safari folder and open, select Databases folder and open. delete the website data. Restart Safari and the offending website data is gone.

Unfortunately, that is normal behavior with Safari, even though it shouldn't be. It has been around for several iOS versions.

I find it does all get deleted the second time I tell it to delete everything in Advanced>Website Data.

I truly wish Safari had a cookie control setting

that said "only accept cookies with the same suffix as the website I am visiting". That would prevent all the spyware and tracking garbage that gets stuffed in the Cookies folder.

10.3.3 made it WORSE for me. I used to only have 6 persisting cookies, now I have over 30! Most are 0 bytes, but many are non-zero. Come on Apple, please fix this bug! Is this due to changing of the file system? 9.3.5 was fine.

I've wasted many hours trying to resolve this, from resetting, restore backup, different privacy settings, clearing one by one, etc.

I've submitted bug report for every version since this bug appeared.

I too have struggled with this problem for years and spent hours and hours with apple support basically running me around in circles having me take very drastic and unnecessary steps in an attempt to fix. I have had this problem on my iPhone 7 and iPad Pro. The other day I upgraded to iOS 10.3.3 on both devices at the same time and doing so permenantly fixed this issue on my iPhone, but not on my iPad.
