Place Email Contacts In Alphabetical Order

I am using an iMac OS Sierra 10.12.3 desktop computer. When I try to add an email Contact to my contacts list, it will list in the appropriate letter section but it will not be in alphabetical order. It seems to drop in at any random position. Does anyone have any idea what I need to do to achieve alphabetical order please?

What I call Contacts is what you are calling address book which it obviously is but I am trying to use the terminology used by my computer.

Yes, old habits are difficult to get rid of. The application formerly known as Address Book was reintroduced as the Contacts app in OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion, but here we are five years later in macOS Sierra.

As previously wrote we can change select individual contact and switch last name to first and vice - versa by taking cursor on top menu bar > card > switch first name to last .

Then again click on switch first name to last > it will be converted > to last name before the first .

The effect is mirrored in the contacts .
