I am using an iMac OS Sierra 10.12.3 desktop computer. When I try to add an email Contact to my contacts list, it will list in the appropriate letter section but it will not be in alphabetical order. It seems to drop in at any random position. Does anyone have any idea what I need to do to achieve alphabetical order please?

tygb, tried that but it makes no difference.
Those all appear to be sorted correctly by the person's last name.

I always install the latest updates but are you saying that you did a complete reinstallation of your system which then righted the randomly placed contacts?
Yes, I understand that but did you see my last post about reinstallation?
I have read your post you have latest updates , on fresh installation every setting is normalised .
Does that mean completely removing my whole installation and then reinstalling from the App store downloads?
