How do I copy my iPOD to another drive? Last time I did this it deleted around 3 months of loaded CDs (Mine not borrowed...)

I have an iPod with loads of music on there. I wish to back it up. The iMac I orginally synched with has now joined the Apple Orchard in the sky.

When I did this (with the original iMac having replaced the Hard Drive) through iTunes, it deleted all of my CDs from the iPod as well as a fair amount of iTunes purchased (seems they only keep the lists for so long?). It took me months to load them all again, I do not want to go through that again and want all of my music in one place. Bear in mind I collected music before CDs let alone iPods; I now have a very large collection. I wish to add more but I am loath to synch again after the last disaster.

I have WD "MyCloud" with 4Tb and wish to copy the full file across to there...

Any advice please?

Which kind of iPod is it? The first link I gave explains how to copy off all of the existing media using Windows Explorer or OS X Finder, plus an additional tool if it is an iOS device. Once the media has been reclaimed it can be backed up again to another location and/or added into an iTunes library to get it organized properly. I would generally organize in iTunes first, then backup, then you can consider reloading the device if needs be so that it syncs properly with the new library. Both linked posts include pointers to my user tip Backup your iTunes for Windows library with SyncToy which, although primarily intended for Windows, does suggest an equivalent tool for Mac users.
