iPhone 6 front camera recording videos without sound

Hi, guys.

I have an iPhone 6 for more than a year now and I'm recently facing problems while recording videos with the camera app. All the videos that I recorded yesterday at a concert with the back camera had no sound at all. Then, I made a few more tests after restarting it and it seemed normal again. But then I tried the front camera just to be sure and I got no sound again.

I just installed iOS 10.3 using iTunes to see if it came back to normal, but it still doesn't work. The audio from the back camera seems fine now, but the front one doesn't work.

The weird thing is that both cameras work perfectly fine on other apps like FaceTime, WhatsApp, Messenger, Instagram and Snapchat. I can hear music/audio on YouTube, Facebook and Soundcloud just fine. I tried installing a recording app to see if it worked as well (VideoCam - the first one on AppStore) and there was sound only when I recored the video with the back camera. Static sound with the front one.

I already seached for possible solutions and found nothing. I don't think there's anything blocking the microphone/speakers on the front or on the back, the volume is all up and it's not on silence mode. Nothing happened to my phone in the past few months (it didn't fell or anything like that).

Don't know what to do. Has anyone else faced the same issue? Please.

Thank you very much and sorry for any misspelling.

Hi, Barbara!

Thanks for using the Apple Support Communities. Based on your post, I understand that you are unable to pick up sound when recording video with the front-facing FaceTime camera--but only in certain apps. I'd be happy to help!

I just noticed a similar issue with my larger iPad Pro after the 10.3 update. At first, I found no audio recorded after making a video (just a faint hiss). All other audio apps worked fine. After more testing, I found that audio was recorded when making a video with the Front camera, but no audio when using the Back camera. A reset did no good. Restoring from a backup didn't help. Apple Tech support suggested there may be a corrupt file, and that I should try restoring the iPad Pro to NEW, erasing all data, and checking to see if the camera worked properly. I'm hesitating to do that, pending a 10.3x update, in case it is a software issue. I rarely use the iPad for video. My iPhone 6s and iPad Air have no issues with 10.3.

I contacted AppleCare yesterday and it was suggested that I tried restoring my iPhone as a new device as well, because restoring it from a previous backup would only bring the problem back. I still didn't had the guts to do it, but I was told that it was the only thing that could help.

After running a remote diagnosis, everything seemed to be working fine, so the Apple Tech told me that trying this restore might be the only thing that solves the problem. I'll try it on the weekend and post it here if it works!

The problem is in my iPhone and not iPad, so it's pretty annoying.

Thanks for the reply!
