Extra math characters on the on-screen keyboard -- Pages 3.1 for iPad

When using the LaTeX/MathML Equation window in Pages 3.1 on my iPad, I see the keyboard is enhanced for entering math expressions. There is a row of white-on-gray buttons at the top of the keyboard -- representing multiplication, division, exponentiation, etc. Those are pretty straightforward and easy to use.

There are also some characters added to the regular alphabet keys (shown below). For example, a 1 at the top of the q key, a set of parentheses above the f, a backslash above the n, and so on. I can't for the life of me figure out how to use these.

I don't have a new iPad; it's an iPad Air (so no 3D touch), running iOS 10.2.1.

Anyone?

Thanks.

I don't know if they cover it, it seems to be part of the baffling new features that I never use 🙂

P.S. I don't know if this is a third party keyboard. Hit the keyboard button (bottom right) & see if you can pick the default Apple one. If it is a third party addition the manual won't explain how to use it.

No. Sorry; I should have mentioned that in my original question. (I answer a lot of tech support emails in my job and know better than to not give complete information. 🙂 I'd edit my question to include the info, but I think I'm outside the window for that.) I tried press & hold and double-tap, hold Shift & tap, double-click Shift & tap, drag up to the equation, tap & drag up to the equation. Nothing I tried worked. Press & hold brings up any variations for that character -- 8 of them in the case of "a", for example -- but it doesn't access those gray symbols above the alphabet characters.

It would, perhaps, be more efficient if the keys only switched to symbols while the symbol key is held down, or worked for just one character, in much the same way that shift normally works. I imagine the greyed out characters are there as hints to make it easier to hit the key you want quickly rather than having to hunt and peck after tapping the symbol key .?123. Maybe this is a foretaste of things to come?

I think you're right.

I'm under the impression you can hold the .?123 key & then slide to a grey character to enter that value. I'm away from an iPad with that version so I may be wrong.

I suspect the manual explains it, either Google for the manual or check the Safari bookmarks for a link to manual - Apple used to add one at end of bookmarks if I recall correctly.

Unfortunately this doesn't work either. Holding the .?123 key immediately switches to numerals & symbols, without an opportunity to drag up to the gray character.

I don't know about a manual, but I have read the information Apple published this week about entering equations, and there wasn't any mention [that I saw] of the gray characters on the keyboard. The only article I've seen about equations on iOS is the one linked at the top of this page, HT207569. I haven't seen any non-Apple articles that mentioned it.

I don't doubt that's working for you, but I can report it's not working for me. I'm on an iPhone 6 with iOS 10.3, and both a tap & hold does the same thing as tap & release on the 123 key -- which on an iPhone 6 isn't a .?123 key like it is on an iPad. I'm not sure what it is on an iPhone 6 Plus or 7 or 7 Plus. But that's what it is on a 6, and it doesn't work. On mine, it is the same as standard iOS keyboard behavior (and the gray characters shown above -- above the q, u, e, r, t, y, etc. -- don't appear on the keyboard, either in portrait or landscape mode. (Exactly the same on my iPad Air, which is where the screen shot above came from. It may be different on iPad Air 2 or iPad Pro; I can't verify that.)

I have an iPhone 6 plus. The key just reads 123 and there are no additional characters on the main keyboard. I do a long press and the the right triangle to invoke the Insert menu, then Equation. If I tap 123 it does the usual toggle. If I hold it down, tap a symbol and release the 123 quickly it usually snaps back to letters, but it isn't absolutely consistent. 😕
