Extra math characters on the on-screen keyboard -- Pages 3.1 for iPad

When using the LaTeX/MathML Equation window in Pages 3.1 on my iPad, I see the keyboard is enhanced for entering math expressions. There is a row of white-on-gray buttons at the top of the keyboard -- representing multiplication, division, exponentiation, etc. Those are pretty straightforward and easy to use.

There are also some characters added to the regular alphabet keys (shown below). For example, a 1 at the top of the q key, a set of parentheses above the f, a backslash above the n, and so on. I can't for the life of me figure out how to use these.

I don't have a new iPad; it's an iPad Air (so no 3D touch), running iOS 10.2.1.

Anyone?

When I tap those keys, the keyboard switches to numbers & symbols, similarly to the way it would in other apps.

Thanks for the info. That's how to get into Equation mode on an iPhone 6 as well. So if you hold down 123, it doesn't switch immediately to numbers, or did I misunderstand?
