Any AT&T iPhone users have a carrier update?

Last night after downloading and installing the IOS 10.3 update, I got a white square popup on my iPhone 6s that is only a few weeks old telling me I had a carrier settings update. I could either "not now" or "allow". This popup prevented my iPhone from allowing me to do anything. I could not place a call. I could not play a game. I could not check my emails. I could not send a text message. I immediately called my carrier (AT&A) to verify they were the reason that popup was on my iPhone 6s. AT&T had 3 different CS agents all deny they were the cause of the popup. They said they had not released any updates since December 2016. I checked Google to see if there was anything on the web about an AT&T carrier update, and the only info Google has was about a hack to AT&T. Finally this AM after speaking to Apple Care last night, a senior advisor called me today to get to the bottom of this. He got someone from AT&T in America who did finally confirm that they had released an update to their carrier settings.

I did not have problems with the IOS update. It was the carrier update that disabled my phone after successfully downloading and installing the 10.3 IOS update. I was curious to know if any other AT&T customers also received a notice about a carrier update after doing the IOS update. When Apple denies they caused the carrier update, and AT&T denies sending an update, I get very concerned about a popup on my iPhone. Thanks for the offer of help with the IOS update.

Because since owning an iPhone in 2016, I have never been notified of a carrier update after doing an IOS update, I was concerned when the carrier update popup appeared. The first step was to call my carrier, AT&T, to confirm they were aware of this update. Three customer service people at AT&T denied that AT&T had released any carrier update. Apple said they had no part of any carrier update. This is why I tried to find another Apple owner here who could confirm the appropriateness of this popup. I don't know how to get a screen shot off my iPhone to show you what I saw, but when a Google search only mentioned AT&T carrier updates being hacked, I wanted more information before agreeing to anything not Apple. My settings area showed my carrier version as 27.0.1. AT&T today said the new version is 28.3. I have updated the carrier settings and my iPhone has returned to it's normal behavior. Thanks for the information. I've only owned an iPhone for less than one year, and never before had to do a carrier update. This did not seem to be normal behavior to me, so I wanted more information before agreeing to the carrier update. My previous cell phone never had any carrier updates and I had owned it for more than 5 years. Carrier updates are a new experience for me, and the web wasn't really helpful.

Hello,

Just to add my input.

I have three devices, a iPhone 5s, a iPhone 6 (both not connected to any service) and a iPhone 7 Plus (my main device with AT&T).

On my iPhone 7 Plus & 5s I didn't get a carrier update after updating to iOS 10.3

But on my iPhone 6 (with beta software) I got a carrier update popup when going to Settings.

All three devices are on 28.3

You're welcome. Carrier updates occur when needed. The carrier makes changes to how the phone should operate on their network, and they also have control over some of the settings the phone allows one to view. This list of carrier files for the carriers exists so when you activate the phone, the correct settings appear on your device. If you don't remember seeing on in the past, I've very surprised. Either way, you have the correct file now and there is no issue. Good luck and enjoy your iPhone.

Older devices, in the past, often had carrier updates pushed out over the air without any notification at all (talking back in the late 1990's - my Sprint Qualcomm phones would get them without notification, or without my having to do anything to install them).

Generally speaking, carrier updates are valuable, as they include things like updated roaming partner information (not just PRL for-fee roaming, but also free shared network access amongst carriers in your native network's high density traffic areas, or areas with limited coverage by your network), bug fixes to calling features or data handling (like voice mail connections)., or new features your carrier is rolling out on their network.

I got that, too. I wonder if this is their "update" in response to AT&T's new ability to collect and sell your information?

If you're referring to the President's repeal of the impending FCC privacy rules, note that the rules had not actually gone into affect yet anyway, so nothing today is effectively any different than it's always been.

It's not a new ability, and it doesn't require anything on the phone. They analyze your usage by viewing the contents of data packets that go through their network. Except for Verizon on Android; Verizon installs spyware on Android phones they sell. (http://thehackernews.com/2017/03/verizon-appflash-evie.html)

Note that this practice has been going on for years. The FCC rule that Congress and the President just killed would have limited ISPs and cellular carriers the ability to do it in the future. So you've been spied on for as long as you have had a phone with data capabilities or used the Internet.

Given the repeal effectively only stops something that was not yet in effect from going into effect, I have not heard of any company yet that has announced plans to change their already existing privacy policies. So the repeal changes nothing, as nothing had yet changed anyway.

AT&T has had privacy opt-out options available under customers account settings for years. You have always been able to restrict their use of your information to internal company use only, if you just review and change your privacy settings.
