Numbers (3.1) new Formula Keyboard - how do I access the greyed out key characters in the shift position?

Well done! I would describe it as a hold and drag, pulling the character you want into the centre of the key. Place finger on key, pull in the direction needed to put the desired character in the centre and then release. Sometimes there are 2 characters left and right at the top. I could not find this in the manual. Is it there?
I figured it out! Swipe down on the key and you get the digit or symbol.
Also, where has the numeric keypad gone? Having to use the qwerty keyboard for data entry of numbers is slow and painful.
Thank you. How the heck did you figure that out?
