after update 10.12.4 - FusionDrive Macs won´t boot

Hi all

I have 2 Macs here, both with FusionDrive. The 1st is 27" Late 2009 and the 2nd is a MacBook Pro 17" 2011 .
Both systems got the 10.12.4 update 2 days ago.

Now I´ve the problem that both systems won´t boot anymore. When powering on both systems show me the grey Apple and i can see one second the progress bar. Then system screen turns black and the system is going tor restart, then the same, restart - looping ...

In verbose mode I can see that this happens when trying to initialize pci .... see Screenshots attached . User uploaded file

I was able to start Recovery mode and reiinstall 10.12.4 again. Then I was able to login and work.

But when powering down the system and restart it, I got the same problem as described above.

This does not help.

So actually if I start working - I start in rcovery mode, make a MAc OS Install, then i can work after 30 minutes waiting .... then when powering off ... same again.

So I do not switch off the system - but thats not the solution.

Is anybody here having the same problem or an idea what helps ....

Next I try is downgrading to 10.12.2 - I have here on a USB Stick ....

any help and ideas welcome

Hi all - in reply to myself -

we solved the problem 🙂

Its not a FusionDrive problem !

see discussions here

https://discussions.apple.com/thread/7909879?start=0&tstart=0

or make a search with "10.12.4 update reboot loop"

We made 2 solutions

1. MacBook Pro 17" 2011 We made a clean Install on our MacBook Pro 2011 17" with 10.12.5 and this is working. All Apps and docs we restored manually. Now we have a fast and very good running machine again.

2. IMac27" Late 2009 we got a hint from Apple

- No update with the APPSTORE !
- load COMBO Update macOS Sierra 10.12.4

Laden - macOS Sierra 10.12.4-Combo-Update

Yes this did the job

- next load COMBO Update macOS Sierra 10.12.5

Download macOS Sierra 10.12.5 Combo Update

Yes working too

In the meanwhile all Mac´s here are running 10.12.5 without any problems.

Maybe this hint will help - without any guarantee.

Hi Marcel

a quick step to get the systems work is.

Boot in recovery mode -> Install Mac OS again -> then you should be able to login into the system again without any lost of data.

This solves the problem on our MacBookPro 17" inch. On this machine we can work normal again. On our IMac 27 with fusion drive we are going to downgrade to 10.12.3 from our timemachine backup ( 18 hours ) ...

I've been using a DIY fusion set-up in my 2010 MBP 13" (MacBookPro7,1) for a few years now, with little issues.

I have a few suggestions, (but, you may have already tried), recommend for anyone reading this:

1) I don't do updates anymore, not even "combo" updates. I download the entire OS (as soon as it's available) and run the whole thing. I recommend this or at least doing the "combo" updates, as I have less issues than others who run only the incremental updates. It takes more time, but, it is worth it in the long run. (You did this when you did the install from recovery mode. What I do is download the whole thing from the app store rather than installing the updates from the update pane. After doing the full install then I check for updates.) (If you're not sure how to do this, or have problems, I can help).

2) Run First Aid from Disk Utility before installing the OS. I have noticed that it will sometimes update something with the boot files (not quite the right wording)

3) Run Disk Warrior. If you don't own this, it is an absolute must, will recover you from almost anything, even a failing drive. (It works by fixing the directory.) I've sworn by this for years. It also optimizes the directory, can sometimes make a sluggish mac not so sluggish (more so with HDD only). It might solve your issue. You can also use it to check for corrupt files.

4) Check your Keychain Access, make sure there's nothing in red there.

5) As a last resort, if you have a current backup, you could try undoing your DIY fusion drive, reformat your drives, redo your fusion drive and do a clean install. It's a hassle, but, could solve your issues.

Or, perhaps you're having a glitch with an app/setting/startup file?

In the german part of this forum, I found an answer of a user who is having the same problem.

The Imacs of this User are still supported by Apple. Apple Support gives the advice to restore the latest backup from TimeMachine with 10.12.3 ( latest backup before 10.12.4). Then the system will boot normal again.

I can confirm this - yes.

Due to this advice from Apple Support I guess they know about that problem ... Maybe they fix it with 10.12.5 ...
