Mackeeper

Mackeeper showed up on my computer and from looking at the comments regarding this, it appears to be malware. How can I uninstall this program. I am not tech savey. I found an app called DetectX witch can remove it but I know nothing about it either. Please advise.

Yesterday that robot window appeared on my iMac screen. Checked it out and it was due to MacKeeper. Never installed MacKeeper or at least I certainly never intended to. Checked my HD with ClamXav and yes MacKeeper was indeed there. Obviously I had done something in the past day to get it installed, but certainly not intentionally. So I checked out various ways to uninstall it. At one point the MacKeeper uninstaller came up and asked for my password to uninstall. Now for some reason I felt that to enter my admin password into a piece of malware that I did not consciously load onto my HD seemed a less than good idea. So I just checked out what files there were by using my favourite little search app, EasyFind, and then selected all the files listed, took them to Trash, and then emptied the Trash. Will see if it works but a rescan of my HD hasn't shown up any MacKeeper-relatged files. Still have no idea how it got in.

Do not install MacKeeper (and how to uninstall it if you have):

https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-6221

It contains a major security flaw, recently noted:

There is currently a class-action against MacKeeper:

(Please note that references to the original developers, Zeobit, also now refer to Kromtech Alliance Corp, who acquired MacKeeper and PCKeeper from ZeoBit LLC in early 2013.)

This recent court case is illuminating:

First, how did it just show up? You have to install it. To uninstall it use the uninstall option in one of the program's menus. Then read the following to remove it completely: How to manually remove MacKeeper from your Mac and How to uninstall MacKeeper from your Mac | Macworld. Also, see:

Basics for Uninstalling Software

Most OS X applications are completely self-contained "packages" that can be uninstalled by simply dragging the application to the Trash. Applications may create preference files that are stored in the /Home/Library/Preferences/ folder. Although they do nothing once you delete the associated application, they do take up some disk space. If you want you can look for them at the above location and delete them, too.

Some applications may install an uninstaller program that can be used to remove the application. If you cannot find the uninstaller then you could download the freeware, Easy Find, to locate files that need to be removed. The places you need to search include:

  1. /Home/Library/Applications Support/ folder. Check if the application has created a folder then delete the folder that's in the Applications Support folder.
  2. Applications may install a startupitem or a LogIn item. Startupitems are usually installed in the /Library/StartupItems/ folder or the /Home/Library/StartupItems/ folder. LogIn Items are set in the Users & Groups preferences. Open it inSystem Preferences, then click on the LogIn Items tab. Select the item from the list and click on the Delete [-] button to remove it.
  3. Some software use startup daemons or agents. Look for them in /Library/LaunchAgents/ and /Library/LaunchDaemons/ or in /Home/Library/LaunchAgents/.

Some applications install a receipt in the /Library/Receipts/ folder. Usually with the same name as the program or the developer. The item generally has a ".pkg" extension. Be sure you also delete this item as some programs use it to determine if it's already installed.

There are many utilities that can uninstall applications. Here is a selection:

  1. AppZapper
  2. AppDelete
  3. Hazel
  4. AppCleaner
  5. CleanApp
  6. iTrash
  7. AppBolish
  8. AppUninstaller
  9. Uninstaller
