macOS 10.12.4 keeps crashing

Updated to macOS 10.12.4 on Monday, March 27, 2017. Each day since, my iMac (Retina 4K, 21.5 inch, Late 2015) with 3.3 GHz Intel Core i7 processor and 16 GB 1867 MHz DDR3 Memory keeps crashing at random. It has happened when running different apps. Twice in Mail when beginning a process such as replying or composing a new email and in a database app called FileMaker when adding or deleting a record. The whole system is affected. Some of the icons in the dock (typically the right side) will disappear. If I secondary click an app's icon, the drop down list appears, but there is no text in the drop down. The app icons in the dock also rearrange themselves and appear in place of the wrong apps. If I hover the cursor over any space in the dock (including where apps have disappeared) the correct name will appear for the app that is typically located there, but the icon will not match or be gone altogether. After about 30 seconds the mouse and keyboard become non-responsive and the only way to restart is by manually shutting down. And yes I've tried restarting from the keyboard. Is anyone else having this issue? What should I do?

Thanks,

Jeremy

Possible Fixes for El Capitan and Later Installations

You should try each, one at a time, then test to see if the problem is fixed before going on to the next.

Be sure to backup your files before proceeding if possible.

  1. Resetting your Mac’s PRAM and NVRAM
  2. Reset the System Management Controller (SMC)
  3. Start the computer in Safe Mode, then restart normally. This is slower than a standard startup.
  4. Repair the disk by booting the from the Recovery HD. Immediately after the chime hold down the Command and R keys until the Utility Menu appears. Choose Disk Utility and click on the Continue button. Select the indented (usually, Macintosh HD) volumeentry from the side list. Click on the First Aid button in the toolbar. Wait for the Done button to appear. Quit Disk Utility and returnto the Utility Menu. Restart the computer from the Apple Menu.
  5. Create a New User Account Open Users & Groups preferences. Click on the lock icon and enter your Admin password when prompted. On the left under Current User click on the Add [+] button below Login Options. Setup a new Admin user account. Upon completion log out of your current account then log into the new account. If your problems cease, then consider switching to the new account and transferring your files to it - Transferring files from one User Account to another.
  6. Install Combo Updater Download macOS Sierra 10.12.3 Combo Update and install.
  7. Reinstall OS X by booting from the Recovery HD using the Command and R keys. When the Utility Menu appears select Reinstall OS X then click on the Continue button.
  8. Erase and Install OS X Restart the computer. Immediately after the chime hold down the CommandandRkeys until the Apple logo appears. When the Utility Menu appears:
  1. Select Disk Utility from the Utility Menu and click on Continue button.
  2. When Disk Utility loads select the drive (out-dented entry) from the Device list.
  3. Click on the Erase icon in Disk Utility's toolbar. A panel will drop down.
  4. Set the Format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.)
  5. Click on the Apply button, then wait for the Done button to activate and click on it.
  6. Quit Disk Utility and return to the Utility Menu.
  7. Select Reinstall OS X and click on the Continuebutton.

If you have panic files, please post a few of them

Kernel Panic reports: Finder -> Go -> Go to Folder -> /Library/Logs/DiagnosticReports

<http://support.apple.com/kb/ht2546>

<http://support.apple.com/en-us/HT200553>

The panic report should have "panic" in the file name.

If you do not have any panic reports, please tell us that, so we do not ask again.

Also please post the EtreCheck output

EtreCheck is a tool to help people on Apple Support Communities remotely debug problems with people’s computers. That can be a difficult task even when the machine is in front of you. Attempting it over an internet discussion forum is extremely difficult.

Back up your Mac if you have not done so already. To learn how to do that please read https://www.apple.com/support/backup/. To learn how to use Time Machine read Use Time Machine to back up or restore your Mac.

Then, shut down your Mac and restart it in "Safe Mode". To learn how to do that please read Use safe mode to isolate issues with your Mac - Apple Support. Compare how your Mac works in Safe Mode to how it has been, and describe your observations in a reply to this Discussion.

Then, restart normally. If the same problem returns, please read the section If an issue doesn't happen in safe mode for Apple's recommended actions.

Finally, you can temporarily create a new User Account, and log in to that account to determine if the problem also exists when logged in to that Account. To learn how to do that read How to test an issue in another user account on your Mac. When you are finished troubleshooting, you can remove the temporary User Account by following these instructions: macOS Sierra: Delete a user or group. Before removing it, confirm you don't need any of the files you might have created in that Account.

Let me know what you determine.

Maybe there is a way to turn on some weird debug logging?

are you jermishershmishusing a different name, or are you pigging backing onto jermishershmish's report?

If you are not jermishershmish, it gets confusing dealing with 2 unsolved problems in the same thread.

And EtreCheck is not a self contained diagnostic. EtreCheck provides information that help us help the users of the forum, which is why we ask that the output be posted.

Anyway, if you are not jermishershmish, then please start a new thread that you control so that the forum volunteers are not trying to remember which post is about which problem in the same thread. See the "Post" button at the top of the page.

Thanks for the suggestions. No luck yet. Currently trying one at a time to see if it resolves the problem. I will let you know which one works if any. Sorry for the late reply. This is a work machine, and my job keeps me very busy. I haven't been able to find the time I would like to solve this issue. In addition to your suggestion, the first thing I tried was restoring from a time capsule backup prior to the macOS 10.12.4 update and trying the update again. No such luck:(

Apr 3, 2017 12:27 PM in response to Kappy

Hi Kappy,

I cannot install the combo update of macOS Sierra 10.12.3. When I get to the step where it asks me to select the hard disk, my hard disk has the following error message, "macOS Sierra Update can't be installed on this disk. This volume does not meet the requirements for this update." Is that because I am already running 10.12.4 and this prevents people from downgrading?

Thanks,

Jeremy

Unless you have a paid LogMeIn account, you should remote the LogMeIn stuff. Since LogMeIn stopped offering free accounts, a lot of people have been carrying LogMeIn stuff that is not longer being updated.

It would be best to go to LogMeIn.com and find out the proper way to remove it from your system (assuming you no longer need it)

If you do have a paid LogMeIn account, make sure you have up-to-date components.

What's the point of copy-pasting your standard_support_answers?

I'm me. I've always been me, except with I was very young and I was called Bobby. But that ended when I was a teenager.

I generally do not use an alias on-line. I most have never used an alias in the discussions.apple.com forums.

And I have never worked for Apple. In the 80's I did work on a Joint Digital Equipment Corporation / Apple project to implement an AFP compatible file server on Digital's OpenVMS (I worked for Digital). That is the closest I came to any professional Apple association.

I copy and paste from the EtreCheck output so that it is clear what I'm talking about. In the above case, I hand wrote everything in my reply about LogMeIn.

But, yes I do have Evernote entries I copy and paste, such as the EtreCheck request, and the image on how to properly Copy the EtreCheck output. I have entries for how to give Feeback. I have one for how to file a Bug report. I have one for finding panic reports. I have a few others. Mostly because they have web links, or I do not want to forget some bit of useful information.

But generally speaking, I consider the question or replies before posting my own reply. Sometimes I get it wrong.

And yes a lot of time I'm asking for EtreCheck output, as it is extremely helpful in knowing various details about the OP's environment. There is almost always something useful to me and others in the report that helps tailor my response. Sometimes it even tells tells us what is wrong. And sometimes we have to make educated guesses.

I use Parallels Desktop 12 (not sure of the exact build, but it is the latest version). It appears the problem for me was in the GPU settings either a resolution setting that once changed from "Best for Retina" to "Scaled" or 3D Acceleration disabled under advanced settings in the same window. I'm not sure which setting solved the bug, but I started with disabling 3D Acceleration, but that made major lags take place between clicks, so I also dumbed down the graphics. In this instance it may not be fair to blame Apple for this. Developers are given a long time to test their products between beta updated and the public release. However the fact that this is an issue with so many different developers products may suggest that it was due to a change that Apple made durring the final build as surely some of these developers would have caught this. At any rate it's hard to tell. However, it has only been one day and no freezes. I will post again in a few days if this has solved my problems for sure in case other Parallels users who have reverted are thinking of re-upgrading. Fingers crossed, but so far so good.

5 days now and no crashes. For those using Parallels desktop and running a 4K iMac, changing the resolution setting from "Best for Retina display" to "Scaled" worked for me. I got the idea to try this when a number of people were saying it was a GPU issue in this update and changing similar settings in other 3rd party applications was working for them. Hope this helps someone.
