MacOS 10.12.4 Graphic Glitches

Hey Guys,

I'm having an random Graphical Glitches on my Macbook early 2015 13" connected to my Dell external display.

You can see it here: https://youtu.be/7b37OmwBE-4

I was able to recreate this issue on this app. But it is happening on all applications from time to time (mostly after fast graphic changes).

I run the Mac Diagnostic and it turned out I have no issues with my mac. I tried the Dell screen with other computers and there is no issue.

I also saw this issue on the following video of someone esle: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UA1lvm7I_EQ

One or 2 times my full screen was full of colors mixed, after reconnecting the hdmi cable it was fixed again.

If anyone has also experience with this issue or an fix or any idea how to test more.

Please let me know.

I found out very similar experience. Macbook is turned off. I turn on Macbook. No glitches on internal display. I connect Macbook to external display, the lid is opened. No glitches on both displays. I close the Macbook's lid. Glitches are visible on external display. I open Macbook's lid. I disconnect Macbook from external display. Glitches appears on internal display. Now, I have to restart Macbook to disappear glitches.

So, my temporary solution is that firstly I have to awake my Macbook (by opening the lid) and after I connect Macbook to external display and must not close the lid. The lid has to be opened for all time. In this case I don’t see any glitches for 2 days.

But, I don't want to have opened the lid when I work on external display. I hope, Apple know this issue and will solve it.

Same issue here, with the twist that I'm on an iMac and not a Macbook. After checking console, the issue started less than 48 hours after I updated to 10.12.4. So far I've logged 8 "gpuReset"s and had the iMac completely kernel panic out on me twice since March 30th - all of which seem to be directly related to this issue and the software update.

As others have also stated, the issue appears to be most noticeable when loading a status bar (ie. Gmail webmail, etc.) but I did have it really go wild using Spotify the other night. As suggested, I reported all of this to Apple via the "Feedback" link posted earlier in the thread.

This computer is less than 3 months old and ran perfectly prior to updating to 10.12.4, so I find it really hard to believe this is anything other than a software issue.

I agree with you that it's almost certainly software related, given the wide number of models being represented here. I can almost force my machine into doing the glitch as I've whittled it down to videos and GIFs as the culprit for me. It's far worse in Safari than Firefox, and dark scenes draw out the problems more than not. YouTube videos in Safari are almost unwatchable. Everything starts to glitch, from the menu bar to the dock. If a webpage has a moving banner or an ad in it, the glitches start right away. Close that tab, and they go away. I've tried turning off transparency, I've tried removing flash completely from the machine, nothing seems to fix it. I'm guessing the changes Apple made to implement Night Shift have had some unintended consequences. Keep sending those reports if you haven't already!

Was there any actual resolution to this? I have the same issue that ThomasZin has, it seems to happen when I dock my laptop to a monitor or undock it. if its booted connected or disconnected from the monitor it seems to work fine. I will have to test this more over the next few days but it appears to be linked to that. Its not just videos or gifs on mine, it happens on the password bar when logging in, and pretty much anything that isnt still/static. I have done the pram and smc reset, reinstalled the OS and even done a fresh from scratch install all to no avail. I have a 2015 (2016 update) 13 MacBook Air.

I'm very happy that I'm not alone on this.

Have been trying to follow it for the past couple of days, are there any news?

Another thing I didn't see anyone mention yet but think is related to the same issue: I've been noticing - apart from the graphic artefacts in various apps and screen freezings - significant performance drawbacks in apps like google chrome (when trying to access specific sites as well. Gmail and Facebook most noticeably).

I'm on a MacBook Pro (Retina, 13-inch, Early 2015).

10.12.4 as everyone else

exact the same problem here on the internal monitor of my mb pro 2015 early, with little horizontal random white lines. but i have noticed the problem before upgrade to 10.12.4!! the recent Sierra was installed on when I bought it, and there were flickerings already... it is random, sometimes rare, sometimes repeating but as i see it has connection to massive visual activity like opening a movie or play something on youtube etc. i am courious about apple's answer

Quick update on my end: I went a few weeks without any kernel gpuRestarts or kernel panics, but managed to trigger the the kernal gpuRestarts manually. On my iMac, the worst culprit appears to the Mac Spotify app. I can run a playlist with no issues, but if I attempt to do any searching around in the app the graphics glitches get worse and worse until the system hangs and a gpuRestart appears in the logs. If I push it even further, typically with Chrome also open, that appears to cause my iMac to panic and force restart.

There is a whole thread on this issue over on the Spotify support forums dating back to a day or two after Mac pushed this Sierra update. Spotify apparently has confirmed the issues aren't something that can be fixed on their end, but they did note that their app uses Chromium so the Spotify rep theorized it could be something with the way this Sierra update works with Chromium that is causing the Chrome / Spotify related issues.

Judging from the further comments on this thread over the past week or so it does seem that this is a more widespread issue than Sierra and Chromium not playing nicely though.

I pretty much just use Spotify sparingly on this iMac now and continue to wait for Apple to address this. I still see minor graphics errors in Chrome, but the same pages do not experience the glitches when I load them in Safari or Firefox. Thankfully, using Chrome has yet to trigger a gpuRestart or panic. Both Chrome and Spotify have updated a few times since I first noticed this problem and it persists when using both, so it still really feels like the ball is in Apple's court here.

I noticed it on a few Chromium based apps (Spotify, Postman, Atom etc) but also on non chromium based apps such as shown in the video i've uploaded (I was using the Apple Numbers app). It even happens on the lockscreen etc.

I already tried to research it on Chrome forums etc. The reason I think it happens often on Chromium based apps is because those are pretty heavy app while using it.

I am looking forward to people who have tested the 10.12.5 BETA version that apple has released. If it solved the issue for you, please let us know

Wasn't trying to say it was exclusively tied to Chromium, just that was a theory posited by Spotify's tech support and it seems to be able to reproduced easily in Chromium apps. I didn't mean to imply it was exclusive to that.

On a side note, I read on a different support thread about this issue that you can work around the issue in Chrome by disabling "Use hardware acceleration when available" in Settings. I gave this a whirl last night, and it seemed to fix the problem specifically for Chrome as a potential work around - obviously not a permanent fix and not something that would be beneficial to everyone.

I'll again state that I seem to have a very mild case of this bug compared to the stories that most of you have told. I'm experiencing this on my iMac. My older MacBook Air hasn't presented any of these issues for whatever random reason even though it's also running 10.12.4.

Since this seems to be fairly widespread, can everyone who has posted in this thread please come back and post what graphics processor your machine has? To do this, simply go to "About This Mac" under your Apple menu. I'm wondering if there's a common thread amongst a particular line of graphics processors here. A few people have reported the issues on only one machine in their household, whereas other machines on the same software don't exhibit the issue.

My Mac is a 13" 2015 MBP with an Intel Iris Graphics 6100.
