ios 10.2.1 to 10.3 battery drain

Hi there,

Iphone 7, Since upgrading to 10.2.1 and now 10.3, The battery life has been horrible.

Especially in standby where it can be charged at 100% and within 4 hours sitting and not being used it will drop 20% battery, Its starting to get very annoying as i'm now having to charge my iphone twice a day, I would be lucky to get 2-3 hrs device usage according to battery settings. I also have friends with the same issue since updating to 10.2.1 and beyond.

Any ideas on what is causing it as i've tried the 10.3.2 public beta and no change in issue.

Starting to with i hadn't sold my Pixel.

Let me try to be helpful. Whatever the problem is, it is NOT a problem with the specific version (in this case, 10.3.3). If you assume it is a problem with the version you will never resolve it. There are a couple of reasons I say that. The first is that this was a trivial change, adding a few lines of code to block a hacker from taking over the radio chip. There is no way such a small change could have created a battery drain problem.

The more general reason is that in the 10 years and dozens of updates that have been released, there are a small number of phones that report increased battery drain after EVERY update. The number of reported problems for 10.3.3 is an order of magnitude fewer than for several other recent releases, and even those were small numbers. There are only two cases where this was actually a problem with the release; 2.0 and 3.1.0. And the many thousands of posts after each of these releases demonstrated that.

If it isn't the version itself, what causes the sudden change in battery life? Sometimes when a version is installed it causes a problem in an app. The update process terminates running apps, and not all of the 1 million+ apps are coded to handle that gracefully. When they restart they may have lost the status of whatever they were doing. They keep retrying and failing, consuming battery in the process.

Another possible related cause is Microsoft Exchange. There is a flaw in the Exchange ActiveSync protocol. It has been there forever; fixing it would require a protocol change, which would break billions of devices that use ActiveSync. So Microsoft doesn't fix it. If an ActiveSync device loses its place in what it was doing it creates a new connection to the Exchange server. But the Exchange server doesn't know about the problem. It accepts the new connection, but doesn't kill the old one, which keeps trying and failing, again using energy. If you have an MS Exchange account and you have a battery problem (even not associated with an iOS update) either turn off the account in Settings, restart the phone, and turn it back on. Or delete it, restart, and add it back.

In general, go to Settings/Battery and see which apps are using the most energy. Wait at least a day after the update to do this, so you have 24 hours worth of data.

Troubleshooting steps for sudden changes in battery life:

  • Kill all running processes, then restart the phone. Note that this will not necessarily fix the problem of stuck apps, however, because they may restart in the same state they were in when killed.
  • Connect to iTunes, restore iOS, and restore your backup. This does 2 things: it deals with the possible but unlikely problem that the iOS version on the phone is corrupted, and it also assures that all apps restart fresh. Remember that app data must be restored, which uses energy, so wait at least 24 hours to see if the problem is resolved. If not:
  • Repeat, and set up the phone as new. Do not log in to iCloud. Do not install any email accounts, calendars or contacts. Do not install any apps. If the problem is still present after a few hours your phone has a hardware problem.
  • If this does resolve the problem try restoring your backup. If the problem comes back you have corrupt data for one or more apps. You can try to figure out which app from Settings/Battery.

I'm on 10.3.3 on both my iPhone 7+ and my iPad Air 2. I can easily get 3 days of moderate use on both the iPhone and iPad. I usually do let the iPad go for several days, but I recharge the 7+ overnight every night so it will automatically back up and so I have a fully charged phone in the morning, in case I have more than moderate use. It's typically at 70% when I plug it in.

"Your strawman just crashed and burned"...

So much for high level people not being condescending. Its not a competition Lawrence or maybe that's how you look at it. I now see why others earlier on were having a go at you for trolling....

Anyway I do not recall you ever blaming the hardware and you spend most of your time blaming the users. I have scrolled back to page 20 of this thread and you haven't mentioned hardware once!! Yes just above, you may say its a few phones, but its in the same para as attributing this to bad configuration or apps in phones, I call that ambiguous or changing your opinion in light of fresh evidence.

Lawrence - that makes sense.

I and many others here have asked why Apple hasn't taken responsibility of this issue. So if you are correct, Apple should either officially say something or if they won't, they should create a fix which forces the processes to stop and update to apply correctly (requiring a restore). The latter would not be a replacement for the normal update, but a fix we can apply when we need to.

I congratulate you on your perseverance. You've convinced me that the earlier ones were hardware; keeping in mind that the geniuses in the store are rated on how many cases they close in a day, so they will sometimes take shortcuts to get you out.

Note that killing apps will not generally save energy; it fact, it may increase battery drain if you kill apps that you use frequently. See: http://9to5mac.com/2016/03/10/should-you-quit-ios-apps-answer/

Same problem for me now on iOS 11 with my iPhone 6... 😠

Over the past week or two I have watched the battery indicator at times drop 1% every 15-30 seconds. I know that watching YouTube, streaming video, or other data consumption can decrease charge life-cycles, but that much seems to be excessive!

I now have to charge my phone 2-3 times per day!!! Was not happening like this before the iOS 11 update...😕

HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have an iPhone 7s plus. Upgraded each time to

The latest software update, especially the latest. My battery drains do fast now. It is unreal. Have deleted apps. Have performed every fix suggested by Apple and other internet sites. My battery continues to drain so fast it is unbelievable! Nothing works. Seriously thinking of getting a more stable phone next time I need one. The battery has drained 30% during the time I time I am typing this. Before the last two releases my less than one year old iPhone had NO issues. So I know it is not the iPhone. The fault lies with software upgrades. And I have turned off all apps, minimized everything. Am not pleased

Hi there thanks for the reply, since 10.2.1 I've had a bad battery drain and still currently have issue at 10.3.

I have put iPhone in dfu mode and restored on various versions even not installing any apps via App Store so as factory as possible.

I stop background activities, widgets and everything I can and still drains battery. I could understand battery drain for a day after installation but it still persistent.

I get a big drain as I'll turn off charger at night and leave it till morning and find its lost 20 or so %.

I have a few friends ranging from 6s-7 that after the 10.2.1 upgrade and now 10.3 are experiencing same issue.

One reason I'm sure it's not the version is my iPhone 7+ which always has the latest version (I update immediately for every release) gets better battery life than I have ever had with any iPhone for the past 9+ years. Yesterday I used it all day, and had 72% battery left at the end of the day. I've never been able to get more than a day out of a charge on any of the 6 iPhones I have had since 2007. Yet, on this basis, I could go 3 days.

However, I follow the recommended best practice of charging the phone overnight, every night, so my phone is fully charged in the morning. And I have enabled iCloud backups, so my phone backs up every night to iCloud when it is asleep, connected to power and to WiFi. I can never lose more than one day's data. As I also enable iCloud photos and Google Photos, I will never lose even a single photo as photo sync for both is near real time, so even if my phone gets run over by a bus I won't lose any data.

If your phone is not getting comparable life I suggest restoring it and setting it up as New, without restoring a backup and without adding any apps. Use it for a day and see what your battery experience is. If you still have a problem make a genius bar appointment, as there's something wrong with your phone's hardware. If it's OK then restore your backup.

Same problem with an iPhone 6S 64 GB since 10.2

I even took mi iPhone to an Apple Store in december. They changed the battery for a new one totally free (some kind of guarantee with a problem with a lot of iPhone 6S). The first month worked pretty fine. In February and March the battery little by little started to performance worst. I tought 10.3 could fix this but it persist. I've done everything: restore the phone, install just the necessary apps, etc. I've never use backups, I always restore the phone and install one by one my apps.

Nowadays I charge the phone twice a day.

Everything used to work perfect until iOS 9.3.5. I hope I could go back to that one.
