ios 10.2.1 to 10.3 battery drain

Hi there,

Iphone 7, Since upgrading to 10.2.1 and now 10.3, The battery life has been horrible.

Especially in standby where it can be charged at 100% and within 4 hours sitting and not being used it will drop 20% battery, Its starting to get very annoying as i'm now having to charge my iphone twice a day, I would be lucky to get 2-3 hrs device usage according to battery settings. I also have friends with the same issue since updating to 10.2.1 and beyond.

Any ideas on what is causing it as i've tried the 10.3.2 public beta and no change in issue.

Starting to with i hadn't sold my Pixel.

Let me try to be helpful. Whatever the problem is, it is NOT a problem with the specific version (in this case, 10.3.3). If you assume it is a problem with the version you will never resolve it. There are a couple of reasons I say that. The first is that this was a trivial change, adding a few lines of code to block a hacker from taking over the radio chip. There is no way such a small change could have created a battery drain problem.

The more general reason is that in the 10 years and dozens of updates that have been released, there are a small number of phones that report increased battery drain after EVERY update. The number of reported problems for 10.3.3 is an order of magnitude fewer than for several other recent releases, and even those were small numbers. There are only two cases where this was actually a problem with the release; 2.0 and 3.1.0. And the many thousands of posts after each of these releases demonstrated that.

If it isn't the version itself, what causes the sudden change in battery life? Sometimes when a version is installed it causes a problem in an app. The update process terminates running apps, and not all of the 1 million+ apps are coded to handle that gracefully. When they restart they may have lost the status of whatever they were doing. They keep retrying and failing, consuming battery in the process.

Another possible related cause is Microsoft Exchange. There is a flaw in the Exchange ActiveSync protocol. It has been there forever; fixing it would require a protocol change, which would break billions of devices that use ActiveSync. So Microsoft doesn't fix it. If an ActiveSync device loses its place in what it was doing it creates a new connection to the Exchange server. But the Exchange server doesn't know about the problem. It accepts the new connection, but doesn't kill the old one, which keeps trying and failing, again using energy. If you have an MS Exchange account and you have a battery problem (even not associated with an iOS update) either turn off the account in Settings, restart the phone, and turn it back on. Or delete it, restart, and add it back.

In general, go to Settings/Battery and see which apps are using the most energy. Wait at least a day after the update to do this, so you have 24 hours worth of data.

Troubleshooting steps for sudden changes in battery life:

  • Kill all running processes, then restart the phone. Note that this will not necessarily fix the problem of stuck apps, however, because they may restart in the same state they were in when killed.
  • Connect to iTunes, restore iOS, and restore your backup. This does 2 things: it deals with the possible but unlikely problem that the iOS version on the phone is corrupted, and it also assures that all apps restart fresh. Remember that app data must be restored, which uses energy, so wait at least 24 hours to see if the problem is resolved. If not:
  • Repeat, and set up the phone as new. Do not log in to iCloud. Do not install any email accounts, calendars or contacts. Do not install any apps. If the problem is still present after a few hours your phone has a hardware problem.
  • If this does resolve the problem try restoring your backup. If the problem comes back you have corrupt data for one or more apps. You can try to figure out which app from Settings/Battery.

I always keep the background refresh as well as location services turned off. The problem is not because of apps or other services turned on, it's the problem with 10.3 software update. iPhone 7 hasn't really helped loyal customers of Apple in any significant way. If Apple is not serious about fixing the battery issue soon it will certainly lose its loyal customers.

Lawrence do the numbers having a bad experience with this update seem higher than normal to you?

Funny you should ask. No, they seem much lower than usual for battery problems after an iOS update. Here's the overall winner:

User uploaded file

But that's not fair, because that was a real problem that affected 5% of users at the time (about 5 million affected).

These are for 10.2.x, which most users in this current thread say worked fine:

Ios 10.2 draining battery FAST!31 pages

iPhone 6 battery drain ios 10.2 problem

battery issues on 10.2.1?

ios 10.2 Battery Drain

iPhone 5s iOS 10.2 Battery drains quickly

Siri draining battery while off 10.2

For 10.1:

iOS 10.1 Battery drain 143 pages

For 10:

iOS 10 battery drain / overheating 14 pages

Apple update ios 10.0.2 battery drain fast. 9 pages

For 9.3:

IOS 9.3 battery drains 9 pages

Battery problem after update to IOS 9.3.1 11 pages

iPhone 6s Dramatic Battery Loss Since iOS 9.3 / 9.3.1

For 8:

ios 8.3 battery life 11 pages

I could go on, all the way back to the first iPhone. But you probably get the point now. If you go solely by the number of posts, far fewer users have problems with 10.3 than with most previous versions.

@Jonathan: the replacement unit had 10.2 installed in it. I had to update it to 10.3.1 in order to restore my backup (because of the file format change introduced in 10.3). So I updated it and then restored my backup, and my phone had no battery problems.

@Milenebr If Apple Support told you to buy a new battery to solve your problems, but you're afraid that it won't solve your problem, you should ask them: What if the battery replacement I paid for did not solve the problem? Do I get a refund? So if the battery replacement does solve your problem, then good for you! But if it doesn't solve your problem, bring it back to Apple Support and have them refer to your case where they recommended you to pay for a battery replacement that did not solve your problem. They should be able to work out some reimbursement for the battery replacement cost that didn't help. Of course, please approach the Apple Support staff politely and don't be rude to them. But be politely insistent. The great thing about Apple is that they have a reputation for having great service to keep. If you're politely insistent with the help you get from them, you will likely never be in a position where you have to pay money for something that doesn't help you.

@Lawrence Yes, Apple never replies to threads. But will users know this, especially since they listed the community thread as an option for Apple Support? This is a case of (intentionally) bad design. Apple wants (and manages to) offload support to its base of users. To many people, writing in an online forum represents the path of least resistance, especially compared to sending your precious phone in for repair, or talking to customer support (which, even for Apple Support, tends to be a terrible experience).

Furthermore, Apple does take part in community threads, albeit indirectly. It recommends answers posted in the threads.

Don't think it's to hard to believe if a 1000 people find and post to one thread there is 10times the people having issues but just looking for answers but don't reply

Absolutely, I agree with you completely. So instead of 1,000 people with a battery problem with 10.3, it's actually 10,000. 10,000/300 million = 0.003% of iphone users have this problem. However, it isn't even 1,000 who have been here. This thread has only about 300 posts, and most of those include repeat posts by the same people, so the number of different users who have participated is under 100. Using the same math with 100, that's 0.0003%.

But I've been reading more than this thread. For example: Ios 10.2 draining battery FAST! The 10.2 thread (just one of many) has 50% more pages (31) than this 10.3 thread. By that logic the problem was much worse with 10.2 than it was with 10.3. But you say the problem started with 10.3. For you perhaps, but not for many others.

What about 10.1? iOS 10.1 Battery drain 142 pages!

For every version update since 1.1 in September 2007 some phones exhibit battery issues. A small number in the general scheme of things, but frustrating for those who experience the problem. The only time it was actually a problem with the version was 5 years ago:

User uploaded file

12,787 posts. When there were only 10% of the number of phones in use today. And even this problem was identified by Apple and fixed. It affected 5% of users, and even then it wasn't an iOS bug, but an email bug that only appeared on phones that had MS Exchange email accounts and that had open-ended repeating events in the calendar where at least 1 event of the repeating series had been deleted or moved.

Same critical issue with my iPhone 6 64GB. Battery draining even on Standby mode with wifi OFF. Also iPhone6 badly HEATING. Background app refresh off. After updating to latest iOS 10.3.3 still same issue. Apple denying of owning this issue. As per Apple store Battery health is fine but some of the apps draining battery, don't know who is responsible if its not APPLE.

We hope Apple will resolve this problem.

No, I'm just a user like you. I don't have access to Apple's data. But if you have the time you can read all of the posts; quite a few people who solve the problem post their solution. Most don't, they just stop following the thread.

The only data that Apple tracks is from users who contact Apple support, either by phone, chat, or by visiting a genius bar. Or by using https://apple.com/feedback. Every such case is tracked, and Apple does look for patterns. That's why there's a special program for iPhone 5 and 6S battery issues, likewise for iPhone 6 Plus multitouch failures, and why Apple altered iOS so a phone that had a 3rd party replace the HOME button would still be usable (but without Touch ID), and a number of other examples. And it's also why you should contact Apple support directly, and not count on user forums for communicating with Apple.

Jun 11, 2017 5:23 AM in response to Danjohn1

Apple apparently do not read these forum pages despite it being on their website. Asking them to fix it here is therefore wasting your time.

To get them to notice you need to contact them directly via their support pages (talk or make appointments) on one or both of these sites:

https://www.apple.com/feedback/iphone.html

https://getsupport.apple.com/

In each you may find that they will say that this is new to them and they are not aware of any issues, which is surprising as this has affected a significant number of iphones (not all) since the end of last year.

So if you want your problem resolved, and you've tried all the normal nonsense, you stand a better chance getting it resolved using the links above, if only to make them (even more) aware.

"can't get iTunes to work on my Microsoft 10 computer" isn't very descriptive ;-)

Assuming the issue is that your iPhone isn't recognized when you plug it in, this is an issue that many before you have encountered. There are loads of solutions to this if you Google for it. Go for reinstalling the USB driver - there's a description of what to do in another thread here on the Apple forums: No Apple USB Driver in Windows 10 Device Manager
