ios 10.2.1 to 10.3 battery drain

Hi there,

Iphone 7, Since upgrading to 10.2.1 and now 10.3, The battery life has been horrible.

Especially in standby where it can be charged at 100% and within 4 hours sitting and not being used it will drop 20% battery, Its starting to get very annoying as i'm now having to charge my iphone twice a day, I would be lucky to get 2-3 hrs device usage according to battery settings. I also have friends with the same issue since updating to 10.2.1 and beyond.

Any ideas on what is causing it as i've tried the 10.3.2 public beta and no change in issue.

Starting to with i hadn't sold my Pixel.

Let me try to be helpful. Whatever the problem is, it is NOT a problem with the specific version (in this case, 10.3.3). If you assume it is a problem with the version you will never resolve it. There are a couple of reasons I say that. The first is that this was a trivial change, adding a few lines of code to block a hacker from taking over the radio chip. There is no way such a small change could have created a battery drain problem.

The more general reason is that in the 10 years and dozens of updates that have been released, there are a small number of phones that report increased battery drain after EVERY update. The number of reported problems for 10.3.3 is an order of magnitude fewer than for several other recent releases, and even those were small numbers. There are only two cases where this was actually a problem with the release; 2.0 and 3.1.0. And the many thousands of posts after each of these releases demonstrated that.

If it isn't the version itself, what causes the sudden change in battery life? Sometimes when a version is installed it causes a problem in an app. The update process terminates running apps, and not all of the 1 million+ apps are coded to handle that gracefully. When they restart they may have lost the status of whatever they were doing. They keep retrying and failing, consuming battery in the process.

Another possible related cause is Microsoft Exchange. There is a flaw in the Exchange ActiveSync protocol. It has been there forever; fixing it would require a protocol change, which would break billions of devices that use ActiveSync. So Microsoft doesn't fix it. If an ActiveSync device loses its place in what it was doing it creates a new connection to the Exchange server. But the Exchange server doesn't know about the problem. It accepts the new connection, but doesn't kill the old one, which keeps trying and failing, again using energy. If you have an MS Exchange account and you have a battery problem (even not associated with an iOS update) either turn off the account in Settings, restart the phone, and turn it back on. Or delete it, restart, and add it back.

In general, go to Settings/Battery and see which apps are using the most energy. Wait at least a day after the update to do this, so you have 24 hours worth of data.

Troubleshooting steps for sudden changes in battery life:

  • Kill all running processes, then restart the phone. Note that this will not necessarily fix the problem of stuck apps, however, because they may restart in the same state they were in when killed.
  • Connect to iTunes, restore iOS, and restore your backup. This does 2 things: it deals with the possible but unlikely problem that the iOS version on the phone is corrupted, and it also assures that all apps restart fresh. Remember that app data must be restored, which uses energy, so wait at least 24 hours to see if the problem is resolved. If not:
  • Repeat, and set up the phone as new. Do not log in to iCloud. Do not install any email accounts, calendars or contacts. Do not install any apps. If the problem is still present after a few hours your phone has a hardware problem.
  • If this does resolve the problem try restoring your backup. If the problem comes back you have corrupt data for one or more apps. You can try to figure out which app from Settings/Battery.

Some updates:

I've chatted with Apple Support (via their app) thrice and they've still not managed to find a solution to my problem. Here's a list of the solutions I've tried (on my iPhone 6S) but didn't work:

  • Re-installed iOS 10.3.1, then force rebooted the device
  • Let the battery drain to 0, then recharge to 100%
  • Let the battery drain to near 0, then recharge to 100%
  • Signed out of iCloud
  • Apple Support ran a diagnostic test on my phone and found no problems with my battery
  • Turned off background app refresh for most apps (they've actually already been turned off before I upgraded to iOS 10.3, so that couldn't have been the reason for the battery drain)
  • Turned off mail fetch
  • Deleted Facebook and YouTube (which show up as the top battery drainers despite having little screen time and zero background time)
  • Checked my iCloud devices, and there are no "extra" devices shown. All devices shown in iCloud are devices I am actively using.

I highly doubt there's any solution I can do on my end that will fix the problem. I have a scheduled call with an Apple Specialist in a few hours, so that might help—I'll post updates if it does.

Hi guys, final update from me.

I had a few calls with Apple Support and they suggested restoring my iPhone as a new phone (i.e. wipe all of my previous data), and then seeing if the battery drain problem still exists. I tried it and... it's still there. I left my phone uncharged overnight and it went from 72% at 2am to 4% at 8am. My Apple specialist couldn't figure out what's wrong with the phone since all the battery and hardware diagnostic tests they ran showed everything working perfectly. So they suggested that I should go down to an Apple Store to have it fixed (for free).

The store couldn't figure out what's wrong with my phone either (they ran the same tests, which of course also indicated that everything was fine). So they did a whole unit replacement for me. Gave me a brand new unit. And guess what? On this new iPhone 6S unit, which is now on iOS 10.3.1 and has all my previous data restored, the problem disappeared. No more battery draining, and the phone doesn't feel warm while it's idle either.

There's just something wrong with my old unit, but no one could figure out what. It's definitely not the apps. It's definitely not hardware damage. It's not something that a standard diagnostic test could pick up.

So my suggestion to everyone facing this problem is to try the following (one at a time):

  • See if there are any old devices appearing in your iCloud list — if so, delete them
  • Sign out of iCloud
  • Delete the top battery draining apps
  • Turn off background app refresh and mail fetch
  • Do a restore of your iPhone, and install it as a new phone

If all those steps did not help, call Apple Support. Tell them your problem, and everything you've done that failed to solve the problem. They will likely ask you to go to an Apple Store to have it fixed or replaced. If your phone isn't fixed by any of the suggestions in the bullet points, then it's likely your phone has a problem even Apple can't fix.

Hey Jonathan, my phone was no longer covered under the warranty period but Apple Support still gave me a brand new replacement unit for free (they bore the cost of the replacement).

The main reasons (I guess) are:

  1. I was very frustrated with their lackluster support (one support staff in particular was late for our scheduled call twice)
  2. They couldn't solve my problem with all the solutions they could come up with, and the diagnostics showed everything was "working perfectly" although it clearly isn't the case

In any case, it shouldn't cost anything to approach Apple Support for help—and remember to ask about the costs before sending your phone in for any repairs, just in case.

My problem looked similar iOS was showing that music and YouTube were my two biggest drains. I hadn't changed my usage habits after the upgrade which confused me. Try disabling some apps in background app refresh and iCloud Photo Library. Turning those two off was able to help me significantly. I'm ending my day around 10pm with 40% battery now as opposed to 15% with a recharge around noon.

Wanted to add this important message to Apple - taken from the article by James Clear:

The 80/20 rule:

In 2002, Microsoft analyzed their software errors and noticed that “about 20 percent of the bugs cause 80 percent of all errors” and “1 percent of bugs caused half of all errors.” This quote comes from an email sent to enterprise customers by Steve Ballmer on October 2, 2002. The full quote was, “About 20 percent of the bugs causes 80 percent of all errors, and—this is stunning to me—1 percent of bugs caused half of all errors.”

Trust Apple Inc. takes a cue from the above message and acts fast!

I just updated to 10.3.1 and as I am sitting here typing this on my phone it is plugged in charging and it has already dropped 2%! I used to be able to charge my phone for less than an hour and have a full charge and now since this update this morning I haven't been able to achieve more than 54% charge! I've never had battery issues until this update!! Please fix this soon!!! I am afraid my chargers won't keep up and I have multiple chargers as we have multiple apple products!!!

I have iPhone 6s plus, since using this phone on iOS 10.2.1, battery life was so perfect(I felt blessed), I have used YouTube many times for about 1 hour with just 2% battery fall, but now since I upgraded my device to iOS 10.3 and then to 10.3.1, battery life becomes terrible, if I use YouTube for 1 hour, battery of my phone falls from 100% to 70%, even performance of battery on standby mode is also got worst, which is very annoying and am regretting about both these updates.

Apple I believe, you will fix this battery issue on this or new iOS update, which is urgent and critical demand of your Loyal Customers.

There seems to be quite a few people having the same issues. With my 7 I can't be sure if it's a battery problem or software.

I have been in touch with apple via chat numerous times and they say that the battery logs show the battery as perfect.

I have also found that there is a lot of logs in analytics as well.

Battery section does not show any abnormal battery/app issues

Apr 5, 2017 9:52 PM in response to Apothe_Kerry

I never noticed that 1% issue on mine as I had even used to switched off as trying to see if battery needed calibration.

What I have done though is gone and bought another 128gb iPhone 7. Out of box it has 10.2.1

Will see what battery drain is like overnight on standby and if ok I will install 10.3.1 because it looks like 10.2.1 is still being signed so I can revert.

I've Never had any baterry issues with my Iphone 6, I have this device for 2 years now and since I updated to IOS 10.3 my baterry is draining too fast even without using.

I recently made a text I fully charged the device 100% I put my device on Air plain mode for about 2 - 3 hours and when I checked the battery charge was on less than 50%.

I dont think this is just coincidence that we all have the same issue or a battery that needs to be replace. What I think is that Apple is forcing random users to buy new Apple Devices.

Apr 6, 2017 4:18 AM in response to jrfromsanto dgo

I downgraded my iPhone 6s to 10.2 and my battery is back to normal performing just great.

Clearly Apple changed something from version 10.2.1 onwards affecting the battery life in a severely bad way for lots of people.

That this problem hasn't already been properly addressed is nothing but embarrassing and the only effect it will have on me at least is I'll think twice before replacing my current mobile phone with a new one and at this moment chances are good my next one won't have an apple logo...
