How to sign in to iTunes on older OSX

Hey there,

I'm working on a MacBook Pro (Mid 2012) that runs OSX Yosemite (10.10.5) because I have software on it that is not compatible with El Capitan or Sierra.

Now I've got a giftcard and want to redeem it. But I can't sign in to the iTunes (v12.6.0.100) Store anymore (which tells me I would enter the wrong password but that's not true) and I found out that the Apple-ID also doesn't even list this MacBook as a device in the list of account devices anymore JUST BECAUSE I DON'T RUN SIERRA!

Surprisingly enough, the list down here in this entry post form does show all my devices – no matter what version of OSX or iOS they run.

This is really ********. Does someone know a way to still redeem this voucher in iTunes?
And if I would do it with another device, would the money be available on my MacBook somehow?

Thanks in advance for help!

Hello Groschenroman,

If I understand correctly, you are trying to redeem an iTunes Store code but are not able to. You also do not see your device listed as associated with your Apple ID. When you redeem a Gift Card, that balance is applied to the Apple ID regardless of the device used to redeem it. I would recommend you read these articles and use them to help troubleshoot the issue.

Redeem iTunes or Apple Music Gift Cards and content codes

If you don't see a device listed that you expect to see, associate that device with your Apple ID. Then check again to make sure that the device is listed in iTunes.

View and remove your associated devices in iTunes

Hey Groschenroman,

Thank you for using Apple Support Communities. Based on what you stated, it seems like you are unable to sign in with your Apple ID password through iTunes, but it still works in other locations when you try to sign in. Since you are prompted to log in and nothing happens, this could be trouble with iTunes connecting to the iTunes Store.

After each step, try to open the iTunes Store.

  1. Make sure that the date, time, and time zone are set correctly on your Mac.
  2. Check your Internet connection.
  3. Make sure that you have the latest macOS version installed: From the menu bar at the top of your screen, choose Apple () > Software Update. If you don't see Software Update, choose Apple > App Store and click the Updates tab at the top of the App Store window.
  4. Make sure that you have the latest versions of iTunes and Safari.
  5. If you're using an application firewall, make sure that it's set up to allow incoming connections from iTunes. Learn how to correctly set up your firewall.

If you still can’t connect to the iTunes Store, try these advanced steps. You can also check with your Internet service provider. Ask them to confirm that the servers and ports that the iTunes Store uses are set up correctly for your network.

If there's still an issue, get more help.

If you can’t connect to the iTunes Store
Cheers.

Thanks for answering.

Unfortunately, the problem that I have already starts one step before redeeming anything. I cannot log in to my account via iTunes on my Macbook. Not even using this "Open iTunes with this link" link. If I click on this link, I allow opening iTunes, get prompted the login form and when I submit my credentials the form disappears and nothing happens. I am not signed in. When I click on Account in the menu bar, I see the menu item "Sign in..." but also using this one does not lead to anything.

I don't have 10 Apple devices, not even 5 computers so it's also not possible that I exceed this (inexplicable) maximum.

So my issue persists. I cannot login to my Apple ID via iTunes.
