Why can't I update Apple ID settings?

I have just installed IoS 10.3. At the top of the settings screen there is a red number (1) by Update Apple ID Settings. I have done everything required, but the red number won't go away. Does this matter?

iPhone 6, iOS 10.3

OK, it sounds like whatever is causing you to see "Update Apple ID Settings ..." is the root of the issue.

  • Have you recently changed your Apple ID or Apple ID password? If so, follow this carefully. What to do after you change your Apple ID email address or password - Apple Support
  • Might you have some items purchased using a different Apple ID from the iTunes Store (e.g., music, apps, books)? If so, consider ferreting those out and removing them from your iPhone.
  • These places require you to sign in using your Apple ID. You might consider signing out and back in on your iPhone in the appropriate section of Settings.

    • iTunes & App Store
    • Wallet & Apple Pay

I have checked "Manage Storage" and recognise everything there; there is nothing that looks like an iOS update package.

When I start the phone I see a message in a box "Update Apple ID Settings. Some account services require you to sign in again". Then under Settings almost at the top of the screen there is a line "Update Apple ID Settings with a red number (1). I tap that and get "Update Apple ID Settings Some account services require you to sign in again" so I tap Continue and have to enter my Apple ID Password. Then I am asked to enter iPhone Passcode - then I have to Approve the iPhone on another device. I do that and it seems to work OK - and nothing happens. On the screen "Approve This Phone" all I can do is tap Cancel which takes me back to "Update Apple ID Settings etc. etc."

I then go back to the Settings screen and it is exactly the same as before.

So what is happening is that the phone goes into a loop. But it seems to work OK - I can even buy stuff from the App Store.

I do not understand this. When visiting iCloud.com, you are presented with this screen:

User uploaded file

The iCloud ID is the same as your Apple ID as shown here. So how can you have a different password for iCloud?

This is my fault, and I apologize. Changes were made with iOS 10.3, and I did not reflect them in my advice above. If you signed out of your Apple ID near the top of Settings, that would suffice.

Yes, the old iPhone 6 sounds like it's part of the issue.

If you use Two-Step Verification or Two-Factor Authentication, perhaps it is a trusted device that needs to be removed.

I know you've tried and failed to remove it. Here is some reading about the subject.

As you hopefully know, iOS 10.3.1 was released by Apple on Monday April 3. I noticed as I installed it that the "1" badge occurred very briefly. It was visible between the time the iOS was downloaded and the time it was installed. Similar experience in the past was why I wondered if Settings > General > Storage & iCloud Usage might reveal an unused old iOS download.

You might try restoring the iPhone.

Thanks for that. I did what you suggested and zapped the apps that "are no longer available in the App Store". Mainly a few games. The only one that needs updating - and there is no update available yet - is Google Earth.

The red number is still appearing though. Would this be correct (and due to Google Earth)?

I would try these things to remove the. badge (number).

First, reset the iPhone. Hold the in/off and home buttons (unless it's an iPhone 7 or iPhone 7+) together for about 10 seconds until the Apple logo appears.

If that doesn't remove the badge, check Settings > General > Software Update one more time.

See if this is the issue:

Check Settings > General > Storage & iCloud Usage > Manage Storage (under Storage). Do you see something taking up space there that looks like an iOS update package? If so, delete it.

If not, you might try looking through the various places in Settings to see if you find something that might be triggering the badge.

I have only ever had one Apple ID and one password. I have a different password for iCloud but if I use that it gets rejected.

I have tried the suggestions in your third bullet point but can't see how to sign out and back in to Wallet and iCloud. I have done it for the others, but the problem is still there.

Not sure about the iCloud ID - I keep a written record of my passwords, but have probably got that one wrong.

Regarding the signing out, if I sign out at the top of Settings (tap my name, go to the bottom of the screen and tap Sign Out) I would lose lots of my settings, including credit card for Apple Pay etc. Reluctant to do that.

I suspect the problem is that I returned the old iPhone 6 to the Apple Store as it had a frozen screen. The store couldn't get it to work and replaced it. I therefore no longer have the device.

In iTunes (third point above) I can only deauthorise all the devices, not just the old iPhone 6.

In iCloud (first point above) I have removed the old iPhone 6

In the Find My iPhone app (second point above) the old iPhone 6 isn't listed, just a generic "iPhone" which is offline.

The red badge with number 1 is still there on the Settings icon on the phone.

There must be a proper solution to this problem, which seems to have been caused by me installing 10.3
