Jittery scrolling on new 2017 9.7" iPad

I just purchased a 2017 9.7" iPad (128 GB) and noticed that there is occasional (and somewhat annoying) jitter when scrolling in Safari and Photos. This machine replaced an iPad Air which doesn't have this problem -- its scrolling is buttery smooth despite having a much older CPU/GPU. I appreciate that the A9 CPU performance should be about 1.8 times as fast as the chip in the Air, but I haven't seen any real-world benchmarks about the video performance. Is it really that bad?

For what it is worth, I played around with a number of similar iPads in the local Apple store and they all had the same jittery scrolling. The comparisons were done using Safari and looking at the same website -- both my old Air and a 9.7" Pro had much smoother scrolling.

Any ideas what is happening?

Thanks.

There is no real solution for this.

The iPad 5 is considered by Apple to be a “budget” base model iPad.

We have since learned that in order to keep the price of the new iPad 5 down, Apple used an older iPhone 6 A9 CPU instead of a CPU normally used in iPad models.

It maybe simply a case of the iPhone CPU not having enough graphics “umph” to power the amount of pixels on a larger screen iPad, causing this type of scrolling jitter.

There is no fix or replacement for this and Apple stores and Apple are denying that this issue exists.

So, your options are to keep using this iPad.

OR

Sell it yourself (make sure to backup and set this iPad backup to factory condition before selling) and use the proceeds to get an older iPad Air 2 model, the current iPad Mini 4 or one of the new iPad Pro models.

The iPad Pro models will be appreciably more expensive, but don't exhibit this scrolling issue.

That's about all I got for you!

Bummer!

Still, no big droves in users reporting this issue in the forums.

So, still thinking it might be a scattered batch of iPad 5s with this issue.

A lot more users, who purchased an iPad 5 model, will have to post to these forums to cement the possibility of a product wide or large iPad 5 batch defect.

Still less than 18 users reporting this issue since the iPad 5 was introduced 6 weeks, ago!

Very insignificant number.

Where did you bought it from? And you have refunded it right? I just chatted with an apple support. Trying to push this out. Will ask again later before the refund period is over if not promises are made.

Also I don't think they would even know it's a problem. If this ipad is for my mom. No way she would notice that. She doesn't play games. Even if it's a kid playing 100 games. No guarantees that they would notice it. Only some people with the eyes would notice it. And even if they do. How many of them would comment on this particular thread? They don't have time to do so. Just like me before. I didn't research enough and thought the ipad is defective. So straight ask for replacement. But the numbers are growing daily. More feedback more cases open for this problem the better

I didn't purchase.

Read this post from the beginning!

I went to my local Apple Store to check on this issue.

Oh, if more users see this scrolling issue or are bothered by this jittering scroll issue, THEY WILL POST!

Oh Yes they will!!

iOS device users come here for every iDevice issue imaginable!

You saw this issue!

If thiis turns out to be an iPad 5 product-wide issue, more users WILL report in!

I have been a volunteer here for nearly 15 years!

Users will see this jittery scrolling issue, if it is a global iPad 5 problem!

They certainly will!!

And as I stated earlier, there would need to be 10,000 users and even larger amount of users, reporting in the forums and posting feedback, for Apple to recognise this as a potential global iPad 5 issue.

Less than 18 users with this issue is NO WHERE CLOSE to be pointing fingers, blame or blanket statements on what could be an very isolated issue/defect!

Just because a dozen users are having this issues doesn't mean that every iPad 5 buying user is having this issue, too!

Waaay tooo few users reporting this to make any call, at this time, that this is a iPad 5 "world wide" defect!

Really...

Two of our regular forum volunteers have reported no issues with jittery scrolling or animations and the post was started in the community members forum, specifically, about this issue.

So, there is, at least, 2 iPad 5 units purchased and out in use NOT exhibiting this scrolling stutter/jitter issue.

They are not seeing this and even well known Mac reporting websites, like Ars Technica, that usually issue very detailed reports on today's electronic devices and Apple devices are not reporting this iPad 5 stutter/scrolling issue, either.

Is this your video? I've chatted with a senior adviser yesterday and she said it's not a known issue and reluctant to push it further. She said my options are (1) I need to send it to nearest apple service center for a checkup but I don't want to because my refund period is will ended by the time I received it back or (2) refund. So I opt for a refund instead which is on the way now. Couldn't bear with the lag/stutter for 5 more years. I will still keep an eye on this thread and hope you guys can solve the issue. Good luck. Couldn't believe my first ever purchase from apple would be this bad..

You mentioned that you went to a store initially looking to buy the iPad5, and you noticed all the iPad5's in there had stuttering. And you only noticed so after coming across this thread. Since you keep posting that it is not a widespread issue every 2posts you post, why not you go to other stores and report your findings? Even you yourself didn't buy the iPad 5 and went for an iPad 2 air instead. Once again, the stuttering is very subtle, a casual and average user will not bat an eye even if they notice it unconsciously. I'm not saying that it 100% is a widespread issue, but you can't completely dismiss and say that it isn't. You mentioned that two of the regular users reported no jittery scrolling, may we have a link or see their posts/testings on it?

TL;DR Stop just trying to say its not a widespread issue by the number of people reporting it, its not helping the situation in any way if you keep posting "there are only 10 users" "there are only 18 users" "there are only 24 users", we already know that. This forum in itself has very little people even talking about the iPad5 itself, a simple search of the iPad2017 in the forums already show 3/8 posts talking about jitteriness.

Uh,

I haven't purchased anything...yet.

And I DO plan on revisiting my Apple Store within a few more weeks to see if the issue has cleared up!

As far as these forums are concerned, there are only two posts about this issue with basically the exact same users reporting in that I am aware of.

So, this is NO WHERE NEAR a widespread issue!

If you think I am in error, please support YOUR contention that there are more posts and users complaining about this in the forums!

And as I continually will state, there will have to be a significant number of users (10,0000-20,000) who have purchased and iPad 5 and THEN coming here and posting about this issue for this to even BE considered a potential widespread iPad 5 hardware/software problem/issue/defect!

People/users only post problems in a technical troubleshooting forum.

Users who aren't having issues with their devices aren't going to be posting!

BTW,

Why are YOU posting?

Did you purchase an iPad 5 with this jitter/stuttering issue?

Where have YOU posted? In the other thread as some of the others in this thread have posted?

Did you notice this issue with the iPad 5 in your own Apple Stores?

Why are YOU wasting my time?

May 17, 2017 2:36 AM in response to MichelPM

Hahahaha. I don't get why are you so salty with your capitalized words just to get a condescending message across. All I said was as much as it doesn't look like a widespread issue due to the small number of people reporting it, the same time we can't just dismiss it because it is reported quite a fair bit comparative to the amount of posts posted regarding iPad5s. There isn't a single person here who has commented that they don't see any lag or jitter, instead u see multiple people agreeing that such a thing is happening with their ipad5s. I am in no position to say whether it is or isn't a widespread issue, but from the looks of it, it does look that from the pool of people who replied and made a comment, there are more who said there is a jitter than those who don't.

Sure it could be maybe just a problem with a section of iPad5s globally, I wouldn't know. But there is more than 1 person who had tried out all the iPads in the store and also opted for replacement yet experiencing the same thing. Not one out of all those who has reported this issue said there is an iPad5 they have used that doesn't have this jitter. That's all.

And to answer your condescending comments of whether I am "wasting" your time, yes I have purchased an iPad5, yes I do experience these jitters, yes I have checked out all iPad5s in my store and they are the same. However I was just pointing out that in your posts you are just stating the same thing over and over again without supplying any info that could potentially help users who are experiencing this problem. In any case, im not trying to argue with you, I believe we're consumers who want the iPad to be bug/issue free as well :) so no need to get all salty. And yes I've posted a thread on my findings as well.

A couple of good solid facts and proof of your contentions would be nice.

Just because YOU and a handful of users are having this issue, does NOT mean every single iPad 5 made or sold, WORLDWIDE, since its introduction has this issue!

Again, some real facts on this, if you know otherwise, please.

None of the major tech reviewers are reporting this issue!

And as I have already posted, some of our other regular volunteer contributors have purchased new iPad 5 models and have NOT reported this stuttering issue.

ONLY time and MUCH larger numbers will tell the tale.

Hahaha, I never said what you should or shouldn't post. I said that what you're posting isn't helping the rest. Feel free to do what you like, it was not my intention to say u should or shouldn't do something.

No need to bring out your "Apple forum credentials" to voice out your first amendment. Clearly you're not reading what I have said. Which in turn, it was abit hypocritical to ask me "Why are YOU posting here?", when I actually have an iPad 5, and the next post you wanna flaunt all your "it's my right to post what I want" hahaha. In any case, do update your progress on finding out about this problem, my intention wasn't to argue with you in the first place :) maybe u gotta learn how to communicate and actually be helpful instead of inciting and provoking other users with your condescending comments and unnecessary capitalized words.

Cheers!
