Anyone else with no sound in Mail?

I recently performed an upgrade of OSX Mavericks to Sierra on my iMac. For this, I did a so-called 'clean install'. I also then made some organisational changes to my external disks. The result has been disapointing, since I now seem to have more bugs and annoyances on my machine than I ever did with Mavericks.

One particular problem I've now spent ages trying to fix is the complete loss of 'alert' sounds in Apple Mail. I use a pop e-mail account (not from the standard list) which I've fully configured to more-or-less the same as I had in Mavericks, the latter which worked just fine. But now in Sierra, none of the 'alert' sounds that you can configure to automatically play when mail enters the inbox can be heard. There's just dead silence. The same is true of the short expediting 'roar' you normally get in Mail (when you've configured for it) when you send some mail. I'm referring here to the 'New messages sound' and 'Play sounds for other mail actions' settings in Mail > Preferences > General.

I have, of course, checked all the settings in the Sound section of System Preferences. In fact, I've thoroughly checked any and all configurations on my Mac that might conceivably affect sound output. But to no avail. However, all sound associated with the playing of music via iTunes is fine. Incidentally, there are no plug-ins or extensions installed.

Curiously, if I choose and set a new sound into the 'New messages sound' box, that sound will be momentarily heard (this is normal). But it just doesn't then happen whenever it should, namely when I receive an e-mail. And neither does the Send 'roar' sound that you normally get in Mail.

I've explored a few system files, hoping for some clues to this. In System/Library/Sounds, all the built-in short sound effects are there, such as Basso, Blow, Ping, etc. But if I look in Library/Audio/Sounds, the folder is empty (including its Alerts and Banks sub-folders).

I've done several restarts of the Mac into Safe Mode. I've of course downloaded all updates for Sierra. I've also used Disk Utility to run a repair on the Sierra volume, but it's not reported finding anything out of place. Can't see there's much more I can do. Anyone else had this problem since moving to Sierra?

In Mavericks, I got used to the 'in' and 'out' sounds in Mail, over time finding them very useful. Their current loss makes Mail less slick to use now. I need to know why I'm not hearing them and to find a way of getting them back.

In other words, altering the mechanism so that if you were sending to yourself - such as I've been doing, as my test method - you don't get the sound alert.

I wouldn't think Mail is that clever, more likely (and it's just my guess) it has something to do with the introduction of Notification Centre which now appears to sit between the App and getting any feedback - the only other App that has this sound issue (for me) is Handbrake, on completion of recoding a video file I no longer hear a sound (even if selected) but the banner or other notifications appear ok.

It doesn't appear to affect Messages or FaceTime (or any other App I can think of such as Toast) so can't figure what the common factor is really.

The other reason you might not get the sound when sending to yourself (if all else is working as it should) could be due to the fact the Mail App is on top because it is currently being used, so what would be the point, but again would Mail be that clever!

The only thing I haven't tried yet is moving completely over to IMAP, but because the sound hasn't completely gone (as in it's intermittent in nature and just on incoming messages) I'm still holding out that a fix will come along eventually and therefore not require that particular move.

I don't think it's so much the introduction of Notifications but more that Apple fiddled around with Notifications post-Mavericks, even adding a Night Shift feature (which has got little to do with alerts and instead is a displayscreen property). In so doing, they appear to have screwed up the sound alerts connected with (in particular) POP mail. I think they set a timer but that the inbox alert gets completely out of sync with it, sometimes wrongly sounding on a Send (so that sometimes you get the chosen alert and the whoosh virtually together, but on most occasions the alert not sounding at all.

Do remember that there is a specific Mail alert in Notifications - or at least there is in Mavericks. If you go to the Notifications Centre, then on the left are displayed the various embedded apps. Mail is one of them and I've got it configured so that 'Mail alert style' is off. (The alerts are generally visual onscreen alerts). Below that setting is 'Play sound for notifications', which I've got selected. So, it's primarily that, in Notifications, that links with the 'New messages sound' setting in the General tab of Mail. I suspect the bug is centred around a timer function because, in Sierra, Notifications never retains any Do Not Disturb times that you configure into it; it always seems to revert to 10.00 hr (on) and 07.00 hr (off).

As for IMAP, I can't see the point of that when it's a desktop machine that you and I and others are using. However, maybe that'll be your only option in the end and would be more appropriate than my own situation if you've mobile devices that handle e-mail.

You could be correct.

I have them all selected but as well as the intermittent sound the Banner will also act in a similar way - i.e. sometimes failing to slide out of the top right corner in response to new messages, don't think they always fail together though.

Same problem.

Upgraded from Mavericks to Sierra, reluctantly, hesitantly; now wishing I hadn't.

I get the sent mail "swoosh", and I hear the new mail sound when I delete a new message.
When I click "get mail" I get no sound when there is no new mail, and I had become accustomed to getting an alert sound when there was no new mail or there was a problem connecting to the server.

I have no idea if I've got other bugs/problems as this was the first thing I tried after upgrading and have been trying to solve it ever since.

I am frustrated and angry.
I wish I had heeded my reluctance to upgrade - for exactly this reason.

Haven't decided if I want to restore to Mavericks via TM - I'm a bit afraid of the result - of possibly causing more problems.

edit: just found out my Safari bookmarks are messed up - some old bookmarks that I had deleted long ago along side the newer ones.

I just finally upgraded to Sierra and I noticed that my alerts have all stopped; basically no incoming or outgoing mail sounds. (I hear a click sometimes.) I searched all over and couldn't find out anything. Finally, I looked at system preferences and saw the sound was off. Duh! "That's odd," i thought, "I never turned it off." I turned up the volume and it was working - for awhile.

It keeps shutting itself off. I keep turning it on. I cannot figure out the pattern as to why it does it. It's got to be a bug.

If anyone has any other ideas, I'd love to hear them.

Unfortunately there are lots of people with this problem. It has been a frequent topic of discussion on Tidbits. The only solution I found was to stop using Mail and use another app. I have a 3rd Party app that I got for free on the App Store and I have 0 problems with Notifications. But the special Verification required for 3rd party email and web apps is a problem with my app, that despite all suggestions does not work, so I do not use the iCloud for backups of my email or anything else. It was just too frustrating.😎

Yes I have been having this problem now for a few months.

Sounds are active/ notifications are active.

What is weird is that the 1st email in gets a purr, then nothing.

I get the woosh, and all other sounds, just not new incoming mail sounds.

It just stopped working one day.

I did a fresh install of sierra and that is not working either.

Been putting in reports to apple for ages but still a problem.

I have the same problem even in the in the newest release of Sierra. I have found no solutions. I even wiped my drive and reinstalled the new Sierra from scratch and there was no fix. I have notified Apple several times and no solution was forthcoming. There are two apps on the App Store that the Notifications work perfectly with...Spark and Airmail 3 (Apple gave a special award to Airmail 3 this year.) I am still trying to discover why sound works in these apps but not in Mail. Both their custom sounds and Apple's sounds work with no problems.

Yes. I just updated to El Capitan and the 'whoosh' sound for sending had disappeared, although the "New messages sound" was loud and clear. Go to Mail > Preferences > General. Check the option "New messages sound" and pick the sound you would like for new messages coming in. Directly under that put a √ checkmark in the box in front of "Play sounds for other mail actions" and it will make all the noise you would like!
