10.3.1 Update Crashes Most Apps. Help!

Updated to current version today and suddenly most of my apps don't work. They will start to load, hang forever, then crash. Over and over. Nothing finishes and opens. This is a nightmare. I have important things I need to do. Email. Safari. Games that need attention or I'll get everything stolen.

Have tried hard restarting phone several times.

Check how much of space you have (10% of total is good)

First make a backup using computer iTunes.

2. Restore as new and test without the backup.

3. Restore from backup and test, if it happens again after this means your backup is corrupted.

Restore from backup

Restore as new

Thanks ckuan 🙂 Much appreciated. This is a great suggestion and I may try it.

I will wait for a few more replies before I resort to this, simply because if it only happened directly following an iOS update, then it's clearly the fault of the software update, not a corrupted backup. Otherwise, the corrupted system would have shown its teeth prior to the update.

This sounds like an Apple problem, not a ME problem 😉

Edit: My iPhone still has 26.67GB available, so memory should be more than enough.

I don't think that's an iOS problem.

I have updated my iPhone 6, iPhone 6s, iPhone 6s Plus & iPhone 7 with iOS 10.3.1 without any issue at al.

I supposed many other millions of users as well since I don't see much report in this forum and the Internet.

I wasn't discounting it as a possibility 🙂 I sincerely value your suggestion and plan on following it unless I find a couple simpler things to try first. I've actually had a corrupted backup once a few years ago, so I know it's definitely a possibility. (Mac user since 1993, and iPhone user since beginning, so I'm familiar with Mac/Apple issues and how they can manifest themselves)

One thing that makes me hesitate to restore just yet, I also updated my iPad Mini today, which is not connected to my iPhone in any way, other than that I run a few of the same apps. It is working now since the update, but immediately after update, iPad was doing the exact same thing when opening apps. Would load, hang, and crash several times. The only difference on iPad was that eventually, the apps opened and stayed open. (I will test more apps and see if iPad is stable on all)

So luckily, I now at least have access to some apps I can't open on phone. If I didn't have iPad, as I assume most ppl won't have both, I'd still be in a major panic.

Again, I truly appreciate your suggestion. I will take those steps. Just wanted to maybe see if I can try anything else before that step. It's a time issue with work and all that. If I don't have any other options before morning, I'll do the backup and restore while I work 🙂 thx again ckuan!

After all my hullabaloo, this is what I ended up doing. You were right 🙂 I restored from backup (skipped the clean wipe step first because of time) and was still corrupted. So I went ahead and just wiped it and started over. After logging in with Apple ID, it's not all that hard to go to iTunes and re-download all apps, etc., and just start over.

Now I just need to learn how to bring back all my iMessages without doing a restore from backup. I've done it before. Just can't remember.

Thanks again, ckuan! 🙂

My wife also has this issue on her iPhone 7. Everything was working fine last night and then she applied the update and now pretty much everything crashes. She even tried to download a different browser which it downloaded but would not open. I don`t see how setting it up as a new iPhone is even remotely a fix? The backup is corrupt? So the update has corrupted the backup? I dont see why she should be penalised for Apples buggering this up AGAIN. Surely they should be forcing through a fix for this? I havent applied the update yet as i will not accept i breaking my apps etc and having to setup as a new phone. All our stuff is backed up to the cloud, she will lose everything?? What an absolute farce from Apple yet again, truly getting worse. Has this update even been tested fully? Doesn`t seem like it. There must be a better solution than "set up as a new phone". What a complete and utter joke. Don`t see how the phone can work perfectly well and then the update is applied then BOOM nothing works. Points to the update being chuffed if you asked me.

No matter what your theory is, data corruption can happen anytime.

That's why we have backups. Important! In this digital world we live in, it's backup, backup and backup.

I don't know about you but all my iPhone 6, 6s, 6s Plus & 7 which my family use have all the updates to 10.3.1 and it's running fine. BTW, our 2 iPads as well, and also many millions of other iPhone/iPad users.

FYI, I will also update to 10.3.2 the next releases. iOS 11 is also coming.

I understand about backing up as i work in IT so don`t really appreciate you condescending tone of the reply. I wont be installing the update on any other devices. We have multiple devices and none will be getting the update. Interestingly enough my work has also told employees not to upgrade their handsets to 10.3.1 also. I will just wait for 10.3.2 and see if that still causes the issues. My wife is not impressed with it in the slightest and she is right to be aggrieved with it. i have told her to restore to an earlier backup and not the one from last night. Screams the update to me, they normally cannot get their ios updates correct at first time of asking. Glad you spoke to the millions of iphone/ipad users though. Puts my mind at rest

Interestingly, I've just recently phone as new as the previous set up was crashing on 10.3.1. This was with wifi issues as other people were having to.

Now, if I go to the previous back up it crashes on the restore wizard showing wifi settings. I'm not sure how that got corrupted but it's most annoying.

I have ended up running my phone as a new set up which is most annoying. If someone knew which file was causing this iPhone backup extractor may let me delete the file and go back to the old set up but so far nothing from apple on this.

I've ended up at the Genius Bar on this as well and my phone has misbehaved in front of a Genius Bar staff member in a way they've not seen before. So there is a problem and I am a little annoyed at the corrupt back up of the previous set up as it has everything set up for my needs.

I have encountered the same issue with my iphone 5s.. everytime i am using my apps like facebook, beautycam, instagram etc. my phone crashes and restarts itself i already have called this to the technical support and we're still observing my phone, we already did the restore using itunes but still it crashes. I have no problems when I updated to 10.2.1 but i immediately notice the changes right after the 10.3.1 update. So i immediately called the support. You may want to call to support too so that an agent would be able to monitor the progress of your phone and will know what to do..
