Do I have a Virus or Malware?

I have had trouble with huge downloads occurring on my adsl account, I changed my password on my internet service provider but it still continues. 15 gigabits in one day & I wasn't even home. I found numerous entries in my Keychain named spark & imessage protection keys. I searched my computer & found a few Spark emails with the following attachment - x00_22569.olk14Message. I have deleted them all. I have a lot of entries in Keychain which I don't recognize & they have no password. Has anyone heard of "Spark" or know how to identify everything in Keychain? I think something like a virus or malware is using my internet connection. I don't do anything intensive when on the internet but I've used 100gig in 2 weeks. Please help.

RAM would be useful. MacSales.com and Crucial.com are well respected Mac RAM vendors. You can most likely take this Mac up to 16GB.

This system is 5 years old. It is within the realm of possibilities that the rotational disk drive is wearing out. Rotational drives, depending on how heavily used, or abused, can start failing in 3 years or last 10 years.

Ok so no viruses for Mac OS X, but there is malware and adware.

You can download this app, http://etrecheck.com/ which does a check on your system, then post the results back here

it can detect malware etc and any other anomalies you may have.

You can also download and Install this, https://www.malwarebytes.com/mac/ and run it from time to time to keep ahead of the game.

Apr 8, 2017 7:23 AM in response to printworks1

Well what a story that tells.

OK you have virtually no space on your HD, a Mac needs at least 10GBs free to perform well, the system needs space to write to and swap files etc etc.

You have anti-virus software, AVG, there is no need for a Mac to have anti-virus software, uninstall it according to the developers instructions.

You have CleanMyMac, noted in these forums as one of the worst things to install as it does more harm than good, often deleting important system files. Again uninstall it according to the developers instructions.

You have MacKeeper same as above, uninstall it according to the developers instructions.

The Mac does a fine job of looking after itself.

Once you have uninstalled these item and created space so your Mac can breathe, then run another etrecheck and post back here.

Apr 9, 2017 8:54 AM in response to printworks1

Besides the explicit suggestions to uninstall as listed by Eau Rouge, macjack, and Eric Root, you might also consider removing the LogMeIn Internet Plugins, unless you need them to use LogMeIn to another system.

Over all, I would suggest you go through the EtreCheck report of Kernel Extensions, Launch Agents, Launch Daemons, Startup Items, Internet Plugins, Safari Extensions, etc... And if you are no longer using it, uninstall it using the vendors uninstall instructions. If you are still using it, consider checking with the vendor for the most recent version compatible with El Capitan.

Apr 9, 2017 9:07 AM in response to BobHarris

you might also consider removing the LogMeIn Internet Plugins, unless you need them to use LogMeIn to another system.

And TeamViewer, too. Never have remote access software installed without very good reason.

Minor note, it was mentioned above, no viruses for Mac OS X, but there is malware and adware. A virus is a type of malware. You can't separate the two as is they are different things. Malware is a generic term (MALicious softWARE) that means anything you don't want on your computer. So malware includes virus, Trojan, worm, etc.

You have a lot of adware installed, which is guaranteed to slow down your system. On each item where you have the option to click Remove, do so. You can also use MalwareBytes for Mac to search for adware and other unwanted junk. It will list what it finds and give you the option to remove it.

You are your own worst enemy using a torrent. Yes, there is some legal content out there available through torrents, but most is illegal. That, and the illegal downloads routinely contain adware, and often worse. Such as keyloggers and backdoors.

Get rid of Memory Clean. Do not use that, or anything like it. Unused RAM is wasted RAM. The OS intentionally uses as much RAM as possible to speed things up. If it needs room in RAM for an active app, it will clear out idle RAM on its own. Using an app such as Memory Clean actually slows the system down. It keeps trying to clear what it thinks is idle RAM. As soon as it does that, the OS fills it again. This loop will happen all day long, wasting processing and system time.
