Hi, I picked up a useful reply from another thread. Tried it myself and it improved the situation much. Here goes:
"Go to settings, apps, iTunes Movies and TV Shows, where it says Quick Start turn it to Off - Problem fixed. They said this is a problem they are investigating and are looking at a fix for this. "
Hi EVERYONE,
may I ask all of you, which Apple TV you are using, meaning which generation and which OS?
I am using the Apple TV 2nd Gen., iOS 6.2.1.
I know this is rather old, but - as you all know - this issue is only for new content. So why should the reason be with the generation / OS version? Well, you never know.
In other words, if this is the reason, I will buy the aTV Gen 4 with the new tvOS asap.... Even though I have been waiting for the 5th generation patiently.
Good point, of course!
I have submitted two tickets to Apple already and are waiting for their replies. The first ticket was last Thursday... still no answer. If they are working on it, which I believe they do, then I would have appreciated a quick note from them.
I'm not sure which model I have but I know it's over 6 years old. My "About" information states it is model MC572X/A and I'm running on software version 6.2.1.
Also to reiterate, I'm an American temporarily living in Australia so I really appreciate all the Apple tickets AND phone calls being done by everyone! Cheers!
Thanks for clarifying that. For all practical purposes there isn't much difference between the 2nd and 3rd gen. TV's. They just beefed up the 3rd gen. so it could handle 1080 video instead of 720 like the previous one. The graphics chip is a little better, the memory is doubled and it has an A5 instead of A4 chip. Given that, it makes sense that if 2nd Gen. TV's are having trouble, the 3rd Gen. ones might as well.

It does not. It may well be that it affects both, but there is nothing to say it logically should. There have been issues that have affected one without the other so it certainly has precedent. Also to say there isn't much difference between them is quite wrong each different part and there are many (many more than the 3 you mention) will have different firmware and potentially function in a wholly different way.
Thanks for clarifying that.
Clarifying what exactly, as I pointed out the 572 running 6.2.1is an Apple TV 2 not an Apple TV 3.
Well, they won't admit it, naturally. But it seems that the issue lies within the older systems. I don't think anybody here has seen these issues with an TV 4, ... based on a very small but not irrelevant statistical sample ;-).
I guess, it's about time to upgrade for me. Siri, here I come :-)
They usually fix these kinds of things without making any announcements. If you want a new Apple TV, by all means, go for it, but I suspect you will be up and running again fairly soon if you stick with your current Apple TV.
I hope so, too. But they have not replied to my two tickets, even though it says that there would be a response within 48h, which I did not receive yet. I give it a couple more days. I'm not in a hurry. Anyway, it's not that I want to jump ship and buy an Amazon Fire TV ;-)
The 4 has been around long enough to prove that it is a good device. I do not need 4k and all the gaming. That's why I was happy with the
2 for so long. Let's wait and see until the end of the week.
I just got off the phone with Apple, and the advisor acknowledged the issue, and said their engineers have reproduced the issue in-house. It's still not determined if it is a server-side issue that they can resolve on their end, or if it will require a patch. But they are working on it.
(I have this issue as well -- started last week). What's REALLY annoying is there's no workaround through AirPlay. I can watch the shows on the Mac and iPad, but can't use AirPlay to at least get it on a big screen, even in Mirror mode... apparently iTunes figures out that it is in mirror mode and "conveniently" tries to directly play it. Augh!
Of course, it matters, you cast aspersions on a theory posted by another, you should have proof before you do that, not only is it rude if you don't subsequently acknowledge your error, but you may mislead a bunch of people who are working away trying to find a solution based on incorrect information.
"Winston Churchill,"
I respect that you have incredible knowledge of all Apple products especially with the TV being your forte'.
Some of us, especially me, could never rise to your level of knowledge therefore we appreciate it when you pass on some of that knowledge with issues we might have.
What I don't appreciate is the condescending attitude with which you sometimes pass on that knowledge. The reason I responded with the picture of my box was your question to Macobs30 "Clarifying what exactly..." I believe Macobs30 was responding to your answer to his question to confirm it was just AppleTV Gen 2.
Kindness and courtesy go a long way, especially to people asking for help and clarification. By the way, your answer to my previous post made zero sense to me because I didn't write it to be rude or misleading but don't worry, I received the passive aggressive assumption on your part that I'm an idiot.
Like I previously stated, I'll wait for Apple to fix this and I will be sure NOT to share again since I obviously have little to offer and am evidently misleading a bunch of people working away trying to find a solution based on my incorrect information.
My apologies....
I'm not sure how I was condescending, you said it didn't matter whether you were wrong about which model it was. Sure it's not a crime or anything like that, but it does matter, it's all but impossible to address a problem if one is discussing the wrong product. To add to which you were typing in capitals as though you were shouting or emphasising your position on which model it was, I feel when someone is putting that kind of emphasis on something that isn't correct, it needs correcting and when they say it doesn't matter, they should be told why it does. Sure, courtesy is important and if you felt I was I apologise, but accuracy is more important, this is a technical forum, details need to be accurate.
Anyone with this problem able to play newly purchased TV shows from this week, specifically yesterday (04.17)?
I have the same problem discussed here with my ATV2, and while the first episode of Better Call Saul's new season released last week does not play on my ATV 2 (but can be played on other devices), last night's brand new second episode that was released this morning works fine!
Very odd, since like all you here, any content purchased or released through a season pass since 04.04 does not play on the ATV 2, but plays on other devices and cannot be streamed from older devices, and any older content before that date still works without an issue. It now seems new content is working again.
Would love to know if this is true for others who identified this issue.
Hi,
I have the same problem with 2 2nd generation Apple TV's. From about the 4th of April, tv shows would no longer load on the Apple TV's despite working on PC's and Ipads. I checked after your comment and I can indeed play the most recent tv show that came in yesterday. We also noticed during our troubleshooting that you can load previews of tv shows and movies but can not play the actual files on the Apple TV. Is it possible that this has something to do with a change in their DRM? I also submitted a ticket to let them know that we are having this problem.
I certainly hope that they fix this soon!
